Nottoway County Supervisor Clarence Simpson underwent surgery more than two
weeks ago, and as of this writing, he has not regained consciousness. The
operation went well, but Simpson has been unable to breathe on his own and he
required additional surgery. Clarence and his family need all of our prayers.

Plans for big doings at the Methodist Assembly Center will
be unveiled here at a special event on Monday afternoon. It has been talked
about for some time that Methodists were going to improve and expand the
facilities here. Sounds like some good news is coming.

Now that Blackstone has agreed to lease the old National
Guard Armory to “Friends of Blackstone,” it will be interesting to see what that
group does with that tremendous structure. The armory came mighty close to being
hit with a wrecking ball, but it has been saved, at least for now. Let’s give
the “Friends” our full support.

There should be a story in this issue about the free
lunches being served twice monthly on Wednesdays at Crenshaw United Methodist
Church here. The number of “guests” has grown to about 90, and the ladies who
prepare the meals are hoping that number will increase, and that the program can
be expanded to every week.

There should also be a story in this issue about another
sighting of that Mountain Lion. For some reason, that critter likes South Main
Street and the 10th Street and Eppington Forest areas. If it keeps crossing Main
Street, I think it won’t be long before it becomes history. Not even a lion is a
match for a horseless carriage.

Here we are in the first week of August, schools in this
county open on the 18th, and it won’t be long before the first leaf falls. Even
worse is the realization that it will be only 90 more days before we have to
vote to elect a new President. I don’t know if we can stand 90 more days of
election coverage. I’ve gotten so sick of it that my TV stays tuned for reruns
of Hogan’s Heroes and the Andy Griffith Show.

And while we’re on the subject, I’m tired of hearing about
what a large crowd Senator Obama attracted on his visit to Germany. So what? The
Germans can’t vote in our elections, at least not yet. Folks should also
remember that it’s pretty easy to draw a crowd in Germany. Remember that runt
with the tiny mustache? He also attracted large crowds.

Good friend Mac Williams, who lives on Lunenburg Avenue,
walks a mile downtown and back every morning to enjoy a cup of coffee with
friends. He will soon be 87, and he complains that he doesn’t “bounce back” like
he did when he was a Marine in Archie Bunker’s “Big One.” Mac says that before
he became a Marine, he was six feet tall. He shrunk a foot while the Japs were
shooting at him on Iwo Jima. His many friends throughout this area are glad
those Japs shot over his head.
