Marker
Gary Marker, Sr., 54, of Wilsons, died Tuesday, November 18, 2008.
He is survived by six children, Gary Marker, Jr., of Dinwiddie, Tabitha
Gayle Mayton of Colonial Heights, Angela Marie Perkinson of Blackstone,
Daniel Lee Marker of Dinwiddie, Jessica Ann Marker of Petersburg and Travis
Franklin Marker of Dinwiddie; eight grandchildren; his mother, Lucille Marie
Fisher of Wilsons; one sister, Brenda Marker Williams of Petersburg; one
brother, Larry William Marker of Wilsons.
Services were held 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 24th at
Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home, 1400 S. Main St., Blackstone.

Charles S. May, age 90, of Blackstone, passed away Monday, November 17,
2008.
He is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, Lona
Robertson and Virginia Gunn, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary Louise
Robertson May; his siblings, Ardene Coulter, Agnes Shields, Ila Campbell,
Allen May, Flossye Boyd, and Ariel May.
Charles was a native of Alabama and lived in Delaware prior to moving to
Blackstone in 1981. He was an Army Veteran of WWII, having served with the
181st Engineer Battalion during the battles and campaigns of Normandy,
Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. A retired farmer,
he was of the Methodist faith, a member of the VFW, Woodmen of the World,
and the Farmers’ Co-op.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 20, 2008 at the
Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at St. Mark’s
United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at
Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home, 1400 S. Main St., Blackstone, VA 23824 from
7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 19, 2008.

Miss Rebecca Kathleen Parrish, 85, of Dundas, VA died November 20, 2008.
“Becky” retired from Velvet Textile in Blackstone and was a life long member
of Perseverance Christian Church in Dundas.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Theresa C. Parrish of Dundas; her
brother-in-law, Arthur Hopkins of Norfolk; her nephew, Chuck Parrish; her
nieces, Betty Jean Sykes, Linda Hopkins, Catherine Leitz, Anne Fleck, Doris
Lee, Marie Hawks, Nancy Lafoon; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 22, in the
Clarke Funeral Home, Kenbridge, with burial in the Perseverance Christian
Church Cemetery.

Callis
Sarah Agnes Moore Callis, 86, of Kenbridge, Va. Died Nov. 20, 2008. She was
the widow of Richard Elroy Callis.
She is survived by her three sons; William Jerry Callis and wife Penny,
Kenneth Dwight Callis and Richard Earl Callis and wife Barbara; two
daughters, Arlene C. Wengert and husband Tom and Elaine C. Pearce and
husband Charlie; nine grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; one
great-great grandchild, her brother, Dennis Moore of Harrisonburg and sister
Susie M. Hillary of Richmond.
Sarah Agnes joined Perseverance Christian Church at the age of 12, was an
active Member of Antioch United Methodist Church for sixty-two years, a
member of the Eastern Star Victoria Chapter #36 and Loyalty Chapter #48 for
thirty years and served as a volunteer at the Community Memorial
Healthcenter for 39 years.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. in the Clarke
funeral Home, Kenbridge. Interment at Antioch United Methodist Church
Cemetery, Kenbridge.

Phipps
William James Phipps, 85 died peacefully at home Sunday morning, November
23, 2008 with the love of his family.
He was a lifelong resident of Dinwiddie County, graduating from McKenney
High School then attending University of Richmond. His career was in the
lumber business, working with McCoy Lumber, Greensboro, N.C.; Ezell Lumber
Company, Lawrenceville, VA; and lastly as manager of Woodlands Division of
Chesapeake Corporation, West Point, VA. As an avid gardener and bird hunter,
he owned numerous Llewellin setters and planted acres of lespedeza and
partridge peas in Dinwiddie Co.
He was predeceased by his wife Louise Richardson Phipps, his parents Ella
Bobbitt Phipps and Frederick Wilmer Phipps, a sister Mary Phipps Robertson,
and his brother Frederick Wilmer Phipps, Jr.
He is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Phipps Dodge and her fiancé Monte
Treasure and a son, William James Phipps, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Donna
John Phipps; six grandchildren, Steven Douglas Dodge, Molly Edmunds Dodge,
James Richardson Dodge, William James Phipps, III, Virginia John Phipps, and
Byron Mason John Phipps; a sister, Sarah Phipps Flagge and sister-in-law,
Almentine Phipps.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at
the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation
Service. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday at the funeral
home. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery, McKenney, VA .
The family expresses sincere appreciation to his faithful caregivers, Doris

Linda Jean Dorin, 74, of Kenbridge, formerly of Richmond, passed away,
Wednesday, November 12, 2008.
Surviving are her four children, David A. Dorin of Kenbridge, Brenda D.
Chandler of Mechanicsville, Tracy A. Dorin and wife, Joan, of Atlanta and
Chuck Dorin and wife, Barbi, of Richmond; 11 grandchildren. Also surviving
are three sisters, Katherine Barnett of Richmond, Anna-Lee Wilhite of
Wilmington, NC and Doris Davis of Ashland, VA.
Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 15, 2008 at
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Blackstone. Interment followed
in the Dorin Family Cemetery.

Mildred Marker Robertson, age 90, of Crewe, widow of Arthur Robertson passed
away Sunday, November 16, 2008.
She is survived by one daughter, Eula R. Norton and husband, Pete, of Crewe;
granddaughter, Lisa Pugh and husband, Michael, of South Hill; four
great-grandchildren, Christopher, Elizabeth, Hannah and Carson; and one
sister, Gladys Cale of Crewe.

Cemetery with Pastor Jim Meisner officiating.

George Fowlkes, Jr., 60, of Crewe, died November 6, 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Idell A. Fowlkes; two daughters, Darlene Baker

Keith Delaney; one brother, Charles W. Fowlkes.

Peter Nathaniel Eppes, 84, of Blackstone, died November 12, 2008.

Brown
Carl “Pinky” B. Brown, Jr., 77, of Newnan, Ga., formerly of Richmond, passed
away on November 5, 2008 after a battle with cancer. Carl was born in
Blackstone, Va., on October 10, 1931, the son of Ida Mae and Carl B. Brown,
Sr.
He served four years in the U.S. Navy, then retired from the U.S. Air Force
where he served in the Air Commandos. Later, he retired from Verizon as a
Power Engineer. Carl was a member of the Sandston Masonic Lodge AF&AM # 216
and a member of the Shriners, where he served as Past Chief of the ACCA
Provost Guard. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Newnan,
Ga.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Brown; son, Carl B. Brown, III and his
wife Bonnie, daughter, Carla Jean Brown; sisters, Delores Rolfe and Betty
Hartley; grandsons, Carl B. Brown, IV, Keith Brown and his wife Heather;
great grand-daughter, Keara Brown; step-daughters, Stephanie Courson (Lee),
Belinda Yarbrough (Mike), Felicia Atnip (Robby), and Teresa Norris (David).
The family received visitors at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave.,
Richmond, on Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., where
services were held on Sunday, November 9, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Burial in
Lakeview Cemetery in Blackstone, Va. Please reassemble at the grave. A
memorial service will be held in Newnan, Ga., at a later date.

Alyene Green Neal, 74, of Victoria, died November 9, 2008.
She is survived by her husband, Chasteen Shirley Neal, Jr.; two sons, Ronnie

Ruth Kreider Petri, 53, of Richmond, formerly of Blackstone, went home to be
with the Lord on Saturday, November 8, 2008.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Petri, Jr.; her mother, Frances
Kreider of Blackstone; daughter, Donna Wade and her husband, Chris; son,
Tommy Petri; two grandchildren, Abby and Joey Wade, all of Richmond.
Ruth is also survived by her parents-in-law, Dorothy and Donald Petri, Sr.,
of Richmond; a brother, Charles Kreider of Blackstone; two sisters, Betty
Jean Keller of Midlothian and Susan E. Javery of Ohio; a sister-in-law,
Deborah Mason of Ashland; and an adopted daughter, Pookie.
The family received friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 11, at the
Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd., Bus. Hwy 460, Blackstone, VA
23824. The funeral service was at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at
the funeral chapel with burial in Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery near
Blackstone.

Fields; four sons, Daryl Harper, Donte Harper, Damont Harper, and Antoine

She is survived by her husband, Clark Sheldon; her daughter, Diane Cliborne;

in WinnView Family Cemetery, Wilsons, for Mrs. Winnie B. Winn, 90, of
Wilsons, who died on November 9, 2008.
She was the widow of Hildrey Prosise Winn.
Surviving are two daughters, Mae May of Sutherland and Betty Sculthorpe of
Church Road; and one son, Hildrey Lee Winn of McKenney; one sister, Sarah
Elizabeth Fletcher of Richmond.

Bachman
Lori Jean Bachman, 45, of Blackstone, Va., formerly of Hughesville, MD., died
October 23, 2008 in Charlottesville, Va.
Born August 14, 1963, at Providence Hospital in Washingon, D.C., she was a
graduate of Thomas Stone High School and worked at Andrews Air Force Base, Homes
& Land in Waldorf and Bevell’s Hardware in Blackstone. She enjoyed cooking,
baking special birthday cakes, crafts, watching her favorite Washington Redskins
win or lose and being able to experience the joys of being a grandmother if only
for one month.
She is survived by her children, Steven Patrick Miller, USAF, of Salt Lake City
and Amy Lynn Miller; grandchild, Aubrey Victoria Gordon of Blackstone; parents,
Sylvia and George Bachman of Hughesville; sister, Sharon L. Iglesias and her
husband, Angelo; and nephews, Joseph and Alexander of Brambleton, Va; brother,
Michael W. Bachman and his wife, Darlene, of Nanjemoy, MD; and nephews, Michael
and his wife, Marie, of San Diego, Robert and his wife, Angie, of Indian Head
and Alan of Knoxville, Tenn.
A memorial service was held October 26th at the La Plata
United Methodist Church, La Plata. The Rev. James Chance officiated. Funeral
will be private.

Beatrice Barlow Barchet, 90, formerly of Richmond, passed away Saturday, October
25, 2008 at Hickory Hill Retirement Center in Burkeville.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest Barchet; her daughters, Frances Limerick
of Hopewell and Jean Defibaugh of Amelia; four granddaughters; five
great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Richmond at
11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3rd.

Shirley Johnson Chappell, 84, of Victoria, widow of Sidney B. Chappell, died
October 28, 2008. She retired as Treasurer for the Town of Victoria.
She is survived by her son, Sidney B. “Chippie” Chappell, Jr., of Kenbridge; her
daughter, Penn C. Shultz of Chester; four grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; sister, Phyllis J. Gillam of Portland, Oregon.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 30th at 11:00 a.m. in the
Victoria United Methodist Church. Interment in the Kenbridge Heights Cemetery.

Hattie T. Daniel, 62, of Blackstone, Virginia passed away Monday, November 3,
2008.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Robert L. Daniel, Jr.; three
children, Robert L. Daniel III of Fieldale, VA, April D. Edmonds and her
husband, Donnie Ray, of Dundas, VA and Danny Daniel and his wife, Cheryl, of
Blackstone; her eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who
affectionately called her “Memaw,” sisters, Lucy Foster, Lillie Joyner,
Katherine McDaniel, Ruth Rice; and her brother, John Turner.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Lillie Turner; brother,
Danny Turner; and sister, Lois VanMeter.
The family received friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at
the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd., (Bus. Hwy. 460) near
Blackstone, and also where funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday,
November 5. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery.

Suzanne Ennis-Karpinski, age 48, of Crewe, formerly of Blackstone, passed away
Thursday, October 23, 2008.
She is survived by her two children, Joseph P. Karpinski and Morgan L. Karpinski;
and their father, Joseph A. Karpinski; her step-children, Christina and her
husband, James Elam, and their five children; and Dawn Brookbank and her two
children.

W. E. Hawkes Funeral Home for Herbert Dean Harper, of Baltimore, Md., who died
on November 1, 2008.

Ruby Hubble Hart, 90, of Victoria, widow of Eugene Malcolm (Mike) Hart, died

Mrs. Hart was a retired public school teacher with the Lunenburg County Public
Schools. She was a member of the Victoria Christiann Church.
She is survived by a son, Gene Hart of Victoria; three grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; a sister, Ella Marie James of Colonial Heights.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 3rd at Victoria Christian
Church. Interment was in Lakeview Cemtery.

Mozelle Warren Johnson, 80, passed away October 27, 2008.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia W. Abel (Billy); two stepchildren,
Cheryl Fleischer and Wayne Johnson; one grandson, John McCraw Jr. (Stephanie);
“adopted” granddaughter, Pam Roark; seven stepgrandchildren;
great-grandchildren, Shauna, Hunter and Kayla McCraw; several stepgreat-grandchildren;
one sister, Adele Robertson; and one brother, Robert Warren (Danise).
The family will receive friends 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at
Bliley’s-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where funeral services will be held
10:00 a.m. Friday. Interment Maury Cemetery.

Vaughan
Donald M. Vaughan, 84, of Blackstone, Virginia, went to be with the Lord Eternal
in the Heavens on Sunday, November 2, 2008.
Donald was part owner and the last of his three brothers, Cecil, Carroll and
Lindley Vaughan, of the original Vaughan & Sons Pontiac Inc. of Blackstone.
He was a dedicated member of many organizations to include: Gideon
International, Crenshaw Methodist Church, Sullivan Men’s Bible Class and Church
Choir, Past Pastron of the Nottoway Chapter #175 O.E.S., Present Chaplain of the
Bethlehem Chapter #15 O.E.S., Past Master of the Blackstone Masonic Lodge # 79
A.F. & A.M. and present Chaplain.
Donald was a servant of God and his people and has served many pulpits at
numerous churches in the Southside Virginia area when called upon to fill-in as
minister. He was a tireless worker in spreading the word of God and for many
years served as Lay Leader of the Crenshaw United Methodist Church, having been
a member there for over 72 years.
He loved his Lord and Savior, his family, his church, his associate members and
the many people and friends whom their souls were touched by him.
He is the widower of Carlene Duncan Vaughan. Donald is survived by three sons,
David A. Vaughan and his wife, Katherine, of Arlington, Texas, Bruce M. Vaughan
and his wife, Peggy, of Blackstone, Timothy D. Vaughan and his wife, Linda, of
Moseley, Virginia; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Mildred Foster of Hampton Roads, Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.,
Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at the Joseph-McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd.,
Bus. Hwy. 460, near Blackstone.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the
Crenshaw United Methodist Church, 200 Church St., Blackstone with burial to
follow in Lakeview Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
