Booker

    Russell Junior Booker, 62, of Burkeville, died Tuesday, February 12, 2008.
    He is survived by his wife, Wanda R. Booker; one sister, Marie Crumpter of McKenney.
    Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday at Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home, Blackstone.

Waldrop

    William Linwood Waldrop, 90, of Mannboro, a retired rural U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, WWII U.S. Army Air Force veteran, died Thursday, February 14, 2008.
    He is survived by his wife, Shirley Marshall Waldrop; daughters, Karen Waldrope of Blackstone and Marian Waldrop Aldrich of Powhatan; sisters, Eunice Waldrop Sommerville of Richmond, Bessie Waldrop Buckner of Virginia Beach, Nancy Waldrop Parrish of Mannboro, Frances Waldrop Clemmons of Calabash, NC; and brother, James Randolph Waldrop of Virginia Beach.
    A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 26th at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St., Amelia with burial following in Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone.

Marshall

    Harvey Lee Marshall, 50, of Blackstone, died February 9, 2008.
    He is survived by his wife, Fannie T. Marshall; two children, Harvey Marshall, Jr., and Taketa Marshall; step-children, Esmer, Torrey, Dominique Henderson and Avis Moore; four grandchildren; one sister, Catherine Reagan.
    Funeral services were held Saturday, February 16, from Commandment Apostolic Faith Worship Center, Blackstone with interment in Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.

Grover Grant,
former Sheriff
buried Tuesday

    Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 19, at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home in Crewe for Grover Erastus Grant, 74, of Crewe, former Sheriff of Nottoway County, and 50-year-veteran of law enforcement, who died on February 14, 2008. Burial was in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.
    He was a retired radio technician for Southside Electric Cooperative and he was a veteran of the Korean War, serving eight years in the U.S. Navy.
    Mr. Grant began his long career in law enforcement with the Farmville Police Department before becoming a Nottoway County Deputy. He later served as Sheriff and also was a member of the Crewe Police Department.
    He is survived by his wife, Flora Bradshaw Grant; one daughter, Kathy J. Smith of Hanover; and one grandson.

Brand

    Joseph Lamont Brand, Sr., of Green Bay, VA, died February 13, 2008 after a brief illness at the age of 84. Joe was a World War II veteran who served in the Active Army and Air Reserve and retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was assigned to the South Pacific in the Solomon Islands, Gilbert Islands, and the Republic of the Philippines as well as Occupied Japan.
    As Welfare Director in San Benito County, CA, he worked with Cesar Chavez in the 1960s. As Welfare Director in Otero County, CO, he was instrumental in removing segregation in local Fraternal Orders in the 1970s.
    Born in Riverside, CA, on May 27, 1923, Joe has lived in Green Bay since 1984 and was a member of Central Baptist Church. His wife, Elizabeth (February 3, 1998) and one great-grandchild preceded him in death.
    He is survived by his sister, Norcen Taddiken of Manhattan Beach, CA and her husband, Robert; his son, J. Lamont Brand, Jr., of Green Bay; his daughter, Nancy Offers of Newark, OH and her husband, Bernie; his stepson, Steve Kirkpatrick of Green Bay and his wife, Shelly; and his step-daughter, Shirley Fischer of Fernley, NV. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and many friends and fellow church members.
    Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 16, 2:00 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, Victoria, VA with Rev. Charles McEntyre officiating. Interment was in the Brand Family Cemetery, Green Bay, VA with full military rites. Please consider memorial contributions to Central Baptist Church, Victoria, VA.

Good

    Dwight H. Good, age 64, of Crewe, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2008.
    He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Good; children, David Good of Virginia Beach and Hal Good of DeWitt; two grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Good; a beloved sister, Carolyn Simpkins of Mechanicsville; two brothers, Larry Good of Crewe and Jerry Good of Winter Haven, FL; three beloved aunts, Rosemary Quelch, Beverly Waquespack and Ann Jobora; all his favorite cousins, nieces and nephews.
    He was a retired teacher with the Virginia Department of Corrections Education and a U.S. Marine Veteran. Among Dwight’s favorite things were his family, NASCAR, and animals. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the doctors and staff of Johnston-Willis Hospital.
    Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 21st at Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home, Blackstone, VA with Rev. Clyde Shelton officiating. Interment to follow at Lakeview Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Walker

    Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday in Victoria Baptist Church for Agnes Knox Yeatts Walker, 82, of Victoria, who died on February 16, 2008. Burial was in Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Amelia.
    She was the widow of Joseph A. Yeatts and Miles E. Walker.
  She is survived by a son, Roger Yeatts of Amherst; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, February 6, at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home in Amelia for Elsie C. Collins, 84, of Amelia, formerly of Blackstone, who died on February 4, 2008. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone.
    She was the widow of Roy N. Collins of Blackstone.
   She is survived by a son, Dewayne Roy Collins of Sandston; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

   Violet M. Newbert, 80, of Crewe, died Monday, February 4, 2008.
Widow of Robert S. Newbert, she is survived by her children, Robert S. Newbert, Jr., Violet “Chris” Dennis, Roberta E. Riley, and Denise Dayton; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald H. Brown.
   Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 8th at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Crewe Cemetery.

   Charles Clifton “Bo” Phillips, 50, of Crewe, died on Saturday, February 9, 2008.
   He is survived by his father, R. Loyd Phillips of Blackstone; three sisters, Ruth Witt, Katherine Dodson, and Shirley Phillips, all of Scottsville; his three brothers, Richard of Crewe, Jimmie of Jetersville and J.D. Phillips of Blackstone.
   Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 12, at the Jonesboro Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Barnes

   Virginia Lee Barnes, age 88, of Blackstone, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008. She was the widow of Harry Wallace Barnes.
   Mrs. Barnes was a graduate of Mary Washington College, taught many years at Blackstone Elementary School and retired from Kenston Forest School, a teaching career of over 30 years. She was a member of Crenshaw United Methodist Church.
   She is survived by two children, Linda Barnes Norris of Blackstone and Harry Wallace Barnes, Jr., of Reston; three grandchildren, Samuel Barnes Norris, Lee Wallace Barnes and Grace Kathryn Barnes; and one sister, Dorothy Ann Irby of Blackstone.
   Graveside funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 12 at Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone. The family received friends prior to services at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home on Tuesday, 12:00 Noon to 1:00 p.m.

Walker

   Rosalie Phelps Walker, of Crewe, formerly of Roanoke, passed away, Wednesday, February 6, 2008. Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband, Earl R. Walker.
   Surviving is her sister, Katheryn Pulley of Blackstone; sister-in-law, Sheryle Walker of Crewe; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Graveside services were conducted 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 9, at the Crewe Cemetery. The family received friends Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at the funeral home.
   In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Nottoway Emergency Squad or Crewe Christian Church.

   Morris J. Brown, 76, of Burkeville, died February 3, 2008.
  He is survived by his wife, Lillian Brown; two sisters, Lucille Drayton and Linda Grubbs; six children, Morris J. Brown, Jr., Marcella Brown-Miller, Peggy Henderson, Lawrence Brown, Tracy Gordon and Warren Haskins; nine grandchildren.
   Memorial services were held Saturday, February 9, with private burial.

   Haywood Patterson, Jr., age 72, of Blackstone, died February 5, 2008.
   He is survived by his wife, Morine Patterson; 10 children, Gwendolyn Craig, Floreace Claiborne, Gertie Elder, Linda Worsham, Wanda Coleman, Milton Elder, Sherry Brown, Sherwood, Cynthia and George Patterson; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, Alan Patterson.
   Funeral services were held Sunday, February 10, from Jerusalem Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the Branches Runn Baptist Church Cemetery, Amelia.

   Betty Roads, 50, of Powhatan and formerly of Amelia, died February 7, 2008.
   She is survived by her husband, James Roads; daughter, Natasha Roads; sons, Allen and Tyrone Roads; sisters, Carolyn Watson, Virginia Shaw and Brenda Watson; brothers, Ricky, Ronnie, Fred Watson, Jr., and Alvin Eppes; five grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 14, from the chapel of W. E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home, Blackstone with interment in the Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.

Glowinski

   Tadeusz Glowinski, 87, of Dillwyn, died Sunday, February 10, 2008 at his home. He was the widower of Stanislaus VonSobol Glowinski.
   He is survived by his children, Lydia Ann Glowinski of Dillwyn, Diane Evelyn Kyser of Charlottesville and Richard J. Glowinski of Dillwyn; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
   Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, February 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

Ryer

   Flora Winn Ryer, 85, of Farmville, formerly of Richmond, died February 7, 2008. A cryptside service was held on Sunday, February 10 in Fort Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum.
   She was a native of Wilsons and a 1942 graduate of Longwood College. She taught for 40 years in the Nottoway, Fairfax and York County school systems.
   She is survived by her sister, Tucker Winn of Alexandria.

Spencer

   Jacqueline Perkinson Spencer, 74, of Crewe, passed away, Monday, February 11, 2008.
   Surviving is her husband of 54 years, John Spencer; daughter, Anne Harris and husband, Kendall, of Christiansburg; son, Tommy Spencer and wife, Paula, of Midlothian; six grandchildren; three sisters, Marjorie Grammer, Shirley Hoyle, Gloria Sheffield; several nieces and nephews also survive.
   Mrs. Spencer was very active in the D.A.R., Crewe United Methodist Church and the Crewe Homecoming Committee where she was best known for her delicious rolls.
   Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 14, from Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Crewe Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crewe United Methodist Church maintenance fund or Nottoway Emergency Squad.

Arvin

   Funeral services were held Monday, January 28 at Ledbetter Christian Church, in Lunenburg County, for Aubrey Hunter Arvin, 87, retired Project Manager at Fort Pickett and architect, who died on January 25, 2008.
   He was a native of Lunenburg County. He received his degree in architecture from the College of Columbia Tech in 1940 and also received an Associate’s Degree from the University of Baltimore. He worked for Glen L. Martin Aircraft Co., and Westinghouse Electric. He joined the planning staff at Pickett in 1981.
   He was a member of Victoria Presbyterian Church.
   Mr. Arvin was predeceased by his twin brother, James H. Arvin.
   Survivors include one brother, Charles R. Arvin of Meherrin.

    Ruby Wilson Morgan Barlow, 79, of Crewe, died Saturday, February 2, 2008.
   Mrs. Barlow is survived by her four children, John Newcomb of Amelia, Ray Newcomb of Burkeville, Melvin Newcomb of Deltaville, Carolyn Coleman of Chase City; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Thelma “Bootsie” Frances of Boykins.

Bentley

   Lynwood Levi Bentley, 91, of Victoria, widower of Louise Bayne Bentley, died February 2, 2008.
   He was a retired federal fireman at Ft. Pickett and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
   He is survived by a granddaughter.
   Graveside funeral services were conducted Monday, February 4th, 2:00 p.m. in Lakeview Cemetery, Victoria.

Hawthorne

   Laura Parrish Hawthorne, 86, of Dundas, died January 31, 2008. She was the widow of Sam Marvin French and Thomas Lloyd Hawthorne.
   She is survived by her stepchildren, Hugh Hawthorne of Chesterfield, Charles Hawthorne of Palm Beach, Fla., Len Hawthorne of Kenbridge and Mary Ellen Balarzs of Powhatan.
   She was a member of Perseverance Christian Church and worked as a clerk at several retail stores over the years.
   Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 2, at 2:00 p.m. Interment was in the New Hope Christian Church Cemetery, Danieltown.

Bentley

    Charles Anderson Bentley, 85, died Tuesday, January 22, 2008 in his home in DeWitt.
    He was a retired lumberman and lumbering and logging equipment salesman. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the 1st Army Air Corps and 8th Division 13th Infantry Regiment in the European Theater, and was a recipient of several medals including two Purple Hearts. He was a member of the American Legion Post 149.
    He was a member and elder of Bott Memorial Presbyterian Church.
   He is survived by his wife, Paula Howard Bentley; his son, John Hardaway of DeWitt; and a grandson.
   Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 25, at Bott Memorial Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery.

   Vivian Dowling Dix, 84, of Dinwiddie County, VA, died January 11, 2008. She was the widow of Lee Bailey Dix and the daughter of the late William Henry Dowling and Nettie Cliborne Dowling.
   She is survived by her daughter, Patricia D. Lewis of Henrico County; her son, Rodney B. Dix and his wife, Leasia, of Sutherland, VA; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Lewis of Colonial Heights, VA and Virginia Timozek of Chesterfield, VA. She was also grandmother of the late Leigha Diane Dix.
   Memorial services were held Wednesday, January 16th at the Antioch United Methodist Church, Highway 138, South Hill Road, Kenbridge, VA 23944. Please consider donations to the Antioch United Methodist Church.

    Mrs. Beulah Morgan Smith of Richmond and formerly of Crewe, died Friday, January 25, 2008 in a Richmond hospital.
    She is survived by her husband, Charles H. Smith; one son, Milton “Butch” Morgan; eight grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Anderson and Alice Jackson; brothers, Charles Morgan and Bobby Morgan.
    Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 30th from Eleven Oaks Baptist Church, Crewe with interment in the Morgan-Jennings Cemetery, Crewe.

Harvey

    Frances Cook Harvey, 84, of Crewe, passed away Monday, January 28, 2008.
    She was born April 17, 1923 to the late Lloyd James Cook and Martha Ovesta Francis. She was the loving wife of Nathan N. Harvey (deceased) for 56 years.
    A life-long resident of Crewe, she worked for the Crewe Hosiery Mill for a number of years and later for the Crewe Garment Factory, from which she retired after 25 years. She was a member of Crewe United Methodist Church.
    A devoted and loving mother she is survived by her children, Patricia Harvey Davis and her husband, William, of Knoxville, Tenn and Nathan Wayne Harvey and Janet Lawson of Blackstone; five grandchildren, William M. Davis, Jr., and his wife, Lynn, of Knoxville, Tenn., John E. Davis and his wife, Ana Maria, of Knoxville, Tenn. and Sandra Davis Mick and her husband, Greg, of Lynchburg, VA, Nathan Thomas Harvey and his wife, Lauren, of Richmond, VA and Christopher Ryan Harvey and his wife, Edna, of Blackstone, VA; and 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Cook Pridgen of Blackstone, VA and Barbara Cook Crymes of Crewe, VA; and one brother, Glenn H. Cook of Virginia Beach, VA. Also surviving are 15 nieces and nephews and daughter-in-law, Debbie Gregory Harvey of Blackstone.
    The family will receive friends at the Jennings McMillian Funeral Home in Crewe on Thursday, January 31, from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 1, at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Crewe Cemetery.
