Milton

   Martha May Milton, age 89, of Crewe, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008.
   Mrs. Milton was a dedicated Christian having been a member of Burkeville Presbyterian Church for some 79 years. She was a loving, caring Mother to her family and also a very giving member of the community.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, David Cecil Milton; and a son, David Cecil Milton, Jr.
   Surviving are her daughter, Jacqueline Milton Wade and husband, Donald Ray Wade, of Pinehurst, NC/Germany; a son, Robert Wesley Milton and wife, Patricia Ellett Milton, of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, David Kirkland Wade of HI, Kimberly Todd Wade and husband, Kent Smolik, of CA, Kevin Wesley Milton and wife, Laurie Milton, of Fredericksburg, Robert Sean Milton of Wilmington, NC; and two great-grandchildren, James Wesley Milton and Patricia Elizabeth Milton.
   Graveside funeral services were conducted 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 15, at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice, VA.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Burkeville Presbyterian Church.

Knott

   Eva Irby Knott, 75, of Blackstone, VA and widow of John Knott Sr. died Friday, March 14, 2008.
   She was the daughter of the late Willie Alma Lloyd and Earl Howard Irby and also predeceased by a brother, Vernon Earl Irby.
   Eva is survived by her two children, Frances K. Woodworth of Springfield, VA and Cairo, Egypt. and Earl H. Knott Sr. and his wife, Cindy of Blackstone, VA; three stepchildren, John Knott Jr. of Mobile, Alabama, Sophie Lee of Carson, VA, and William Knott; and eight grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Myrtle Irby; and brothers, Darrell, Harry and William Irby, Sr., all of Lunenburg Co., VA.
   A Mass of Ressurrection was conducted by Reverend John Kloepfer at the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Catholic Church in Blackstone at 10 A.M., Monday, March 17, 2008. Burial rites will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Petersburg.
   The family received friends from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, March16, at Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd., Bus. Hwy. 460, near Blackstone.

Yates

   Mrs. Annie Mae Yates, 80, of Blackstone, died March 14, 2008.
  She is survived by her three sons, Thomas, Richard and Michael Yates; one brother, Gussie Dagner; one sister, Irene Dagner, all of Blackstone; 16 grandchildren.
   Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 18, from Cellar Creek Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.

Brown

   Mrs. Mary Louise Brown, 87, of Amelia, died March 13, 2008.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Brown; sons, Charles Brown, Robert Brown, Ralph Brown, Henry Brown; three daughters, Katherine Brown, Mary Brown and Nancy Tucker; one sister, Rebecca Burrell.
   Funeral services were held Monday, March 17, from Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Blackstone with interment in the Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.

   Mrs. Emma B. Edmonds, 93, of Blackstone, died March 11, 2008.
She is survived by one daughter, Rosa Adams; one son, Sema Howerton; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Minnie Tucker.
   Funeral services were held Saturday, March 15, from Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.

Draper

   Robert E. “Mud” Draper, 78, of Blackstone, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2008. Mr. Draper was born March 30, 1929, a son of the late Cosby Alvin and Charlotte Elmore Draper.
   Mr. Draper was a retired supervisor with Centel Telephone Company, a Korean War Army veteran, a member of Crenshaw United Methodist Church, a Scout Master with Troop #6540, which he started in the early ‘80s, active in the Robert E. Council, now the Heart of Virginia, a Wood Badge recipient, a member of the Blackstone Lions Club, and loved the Boy Scouts.
   Surviving are his son, Ray Draper and wife, Debbie, of King George, and their children, Kyle, Natalle and Christina; his daughter, Jayne Spencer and husband, Mike, of Crewe, and their child, Scott; and his daughter, Pamela D. Jones of Deltaville.
   Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 14, at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Scott Hopkins officiating. Interment followed at Lakeview Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elliott

    Carl Wilson Elliott, 86, a retired farmer and painter of Kenbridge, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
    He is survived by his wife, Rosa Clarke Elliott; two sons, Carl Elliott of Kenbridge and Robbie Elliott of Greensville, S.C.; a daughter, Yvonne Moore of Kenbridge; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
    Wilson was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.
    Graveside funeral services with military honors were held Friday, March 7, at 2:00 p.m in the Kenbridge Heights Cemetery.

    Mary Dean Buchanan, 85, of Kenbridge, died Saturday, March 8, 2008.
    She is survived by her husband, Thomas Bradford Buchanan; her daughter, Linda B. Sheridan of Port Orange, Fla.; her son, John B. Buchanan of Springfield, Va.; and five grandchildren.
    Graveside services were held Monday, March 10, at 2:00 p.m in the Dundas Baptist Church Cemetery, Dundas.

Phillips

    Waverly Bennett Phillips, 74, of Dundas, died Saturday, March 8, 2008 at his home with his family by his side.
    He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Grant Phillips; five sons, David Phillips of Pasadena, Tx. Paul Phillips of Danieltown, George Phillips of the home, Dennis Phillips of Brodnax, Dean Phillips of Kenbridge, three daughters, Sandra P. Bennett of Lindale, Tx., Wanda P. Falls of Amelia, Kathy P. Coffee of Kenbridge; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Blanche P. Bradley of Emporia and Ethel P. Selden of Petersburg.
    Waverly was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
    Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 11, at 2:00 p.m in the Jonesboro Baptist Church, Blackstone, with interment in the church cemetery.

    Mrs. Virginia Pauline Edmonds, 62, of Blackstone, died Friday, March 7, 2008.
    She is survived by her husband, Jimmie Edmonds; one son, Ronnie Johnson; one daughter, Tremoyne Johnson; seven sisters, Annie Gee, Brenda Hawkes, Edith Bonner, Sara Coleman, Theresa, Geraldine and Wanda Johnson; five brothers, Bobby, Leroy, Carl, Charles and Tyrone Johnson; two granddaughters.
    Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 11, from Mt. Level Baptist Church, Amelia with interment in the church cemetery.

Anzolut

    A funeral service was held Saturday, March 8th in Harrisburg, PA for Marian Lillian Hartwick Anzolut, 74, of Pheasant Hill Estates, Harrisburg. Ms. Anzolut died Thursday, March 6, 2008 after a brief illness.
    Ms. Anzolut is survived by her mother, Marian Hartwick of Harrisburg; a son, Richard A. Anzolut, Jr. of Colonial Heights; three daughters, Lauren A. McClure of Harrisburg, PA, Gayle E. Anzolut of Wormleysburg, PA, and Joyce A. Coleburn of Blackstone, VA. She is also survived by a brother, Lee Hartwick of Harrisburg. Her grandchildren include Caroline Harris Coleburn and Mary Katherine Coleburn of Blackstone.
    Marian lived in Chagrin Falls, Ohio for more than 30 years before returning to her hometown of Harrisburg 11 years ago. She visited Blackstone on a number of occasions and enjoyed a number of Grand Illuminations in Seay Park as well as Blackstone Presbyterian Church easter egg hunts at Oakwood.
    Ms. Anzolut was a retired medical office assistant who was a member of various senior citizens groups. She loved her family, was an avid conversationalist with a vivid memory, and she was an entertaining storyteller, who will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

Hawkes

    Dr. Robert T. Hawkes, Jr., of Blackstone, VA, formerly of Fairfax, VA and retired history professor and dean of George Mason University, departed this life, Tuesday, March 4, 2008, where he was born.
    He was born on January 27, 1942, at the ancestral home Boxwood to the late Robert Thomas Hawkes and Mary Frances White Hawkes.
    Robbie, as affectionately called, was a 1960 graduate of Blackstone High School; received his BA in 1964 in history from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA; his MA in 1967, and his PhD in 1975 in history from the University of Virginia. He also completed post doctorate work from Harvard University.
    Dr. Hawkes began his 37 years of teaching American Southern History at George Mason College of the University of Virginia in 1969. In 1973, one year after George Mason became its own entity, he founded its continuing education department and as its dean, developed its programs into becoming the School of Continuing and Alternative Learning of George Mason University. He also served as Scholar-in-Residence at Gunston Hall, George Masons homeplace.
    With his great love for teaching, he later resigned as dean in 1991, to return to fulltime teaching for the History Department at George Mason University. He was awarded Faculty Member of the Year in 1996, by the Alumni Association.
    In 2006, upon Dr. Hawkes retirement, the History & Art History Department initiated the Robert T. Hawkes Endowed Professorship Fund. This fund is to emphasize excellence in teaching and in fostering caring relationships with students. This year, Dr. Hawkes was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by Randolph-Macon College.
    Robbie is survived by his brother, Benjamin White Hawkes and his wife, Betty of Kernersville, N.C.; his sister, Mary Sue Wilson and her husband, Whip of Crewe, VA; his special friend, Alexis Montero of Fairfax, VA; his nieces, Pamela Hawkes James of Mooresville, N.C. and Glenda Hawkes Leinbach of Jamestown, N.C.; and his two nephews, Thomas Allen Davis and Robert Heyward Davis III, both of Blackstone, VA.
    Services were held at 2:30 P.M., Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Crenshaw United Methodist Church, 200 Church Street, Blackstone, with committal following in Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery in Wilsons, VA.
    The family received friends at Boxwood, 799 Woodland Lane in Blackstone, from Noon til 1:30 P.M. prior to the time of the services.

Hamner

    Frank Dent Hamner of Arlington, died on March 8, 2008. He was born February 21, 1935 to parents, Dr. John E. and Ethel Dent Hamner of Petersburg.
    He is survived by a daughter, Katherine Murray of Boston.
   Frank served in the US Air Force from 1952-1956, having seen action in Korea.
   Graveside service will be held at Blandford Cemetery on Thursday, March 13, at 11 a.m.

Buynitzky

    Nell Buynitzky, 97, of Waynesboro and formerly of Arlington, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Summit Square.
    She had a long career on Capitol Hill where she held positions in several congressional offices. At the time of her retirement she was the Administrative Assistant to Congressman Sam Gibbons of Florida.
    She is survived by her sons, Stephen Howlett and George Howlett; three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
   There will be a graveside service at Lakeview Cemetery in Blackstone on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at 2:00 p.m.

Duncanson

    Gregory Allen Duncanson, age 48, of Blackstone, died at his home on Thursday, February 28, 2008 after a brave battle with brain cancer.
    Greg was devoted to his wife, his family, and many friends. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering, was owner of O.D. Duncanson, Jr. & Sons, and was a recent employee of the Department of Public Works, Fort Pickett.
    He is preceded in death by his father, O. D. Duncanson, Jr., and brother-in-law, Carl Wilson.
    Greg is survived by his wife, Sondra C. Duncanson; mother, Nancy S. Duncanson; brother, O. D. Duncanson III and his wife, Zona; sister, Nancy D. Wilson; stepson, Craig L. Dalton; and a host of nieces and nephews, all of Blackstone.
    Memorial services were held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Crenshaw United Methodist Church, Blackstone. Reverend Scott Hopkins officiated. The family gathered following the services in the LC Sullivan’s Bible Class to receive friends.

    Alease Crenshaw Slaughter, 82, of Victoria, died February 29, 2008.
    She is survived by her husband, Richard Dennis “Dick” Slaughter; a son, Richard Dennis “Ricky” Slaughter, Jr.; one granddaughter.

Tuggle

    Charlotte “Scottie” Scott Booker Tuggle, 90, born August 3, 1917, of Richmond, departed this life on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 in Camden, SC.
    She was the widow of Richard Wilfred Tuggle, a former senior executive officer of the Universal Leaf Tobacco Company. She was the second daughter of John Anderson Booker and Jessie Mayland Crowe Booker, of Blackstone, VA. Born in Farmville, VA, she was raised in Blackstone and was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeh Mayland Booker Irby; and her brothers, John Anderson Booker, Jr., and Richard Francis Booker.
    She is survived by her daughter, Pattie Armstrong Tuggle Miller and her husband, W. Schuyler Miller, Jr., of Ashland, VA; her sons, Richard Wilfred (Will) Tuggle, Jr., and his fiancé, Patricia Harrison Cox, of Marietta, GA and Edward Anderson (Ned) Tuggle of Camden, SC. She had three grandchildren, India Vass Tuggle, Edward Davis Tuggle and Willa Duval Tuggle, all of Columbia, SC.
    A graduate of Mary Washington College, she was a lifetime member of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal, where she served on the alter guild. She was a lifetime volunteer and served on the Board at Retreat Hospital. She was a member of Willow Oaks Country Club, The Woman’s Club, the Tuckahoe Woman’s Club, and the Richmond Women’s Golf Association. She was a loving servant and friend to all who knew her. She will be buried from The Church of the Good Shepherd, Richmond.
    A graveside service was held at Lakeview Cemetery in Blackstone on Sunday, March 2, at 2:00 p.m. The Very Reverend Sandra B. Kerner, Rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Blackstone officiated. The family received friends at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall following the service.
    Funeral arrangements are being handled by Joseph B. McMillian Funeral Home at 1826 Cox Road, Blackstone, VA.

Wynn

    Earl Augustus Wynn, 91, of Blackstone, died February 25, 2008.
   He is survived by three children, Vernard Wynn, Val Jean Wynn Dawkins and Earl Wynn; one grandson; one sister, Ruth Eppes.
    Funeral services were held Saturday, March 1, at Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.

Rites Saturday
for former
State Senator


    A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. this coming Saturday, March 8th in Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond for James T. Edmunds, former State Senator, who died on February 27, 2008. He was 76.
    A former resident of Kenbridge and a practicing attorney and businessman, Edmunds had lived on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in recent years. He died of cancer at the home of a son in Varina.
    Mr. Edmunds was well-known in this area, serving as a District Governor of Lions, as a lay leader at Kenbridge United Methodist Church, and as President of the PTA. He was Town Attorney for Kenbridge for a number of years.
    A Democrat, he was elected to the Senate from District 17 in 1971 and served until 1979, when defeated by Republican Eva Scott of Amelia.
    He was a native of New York state. He graduated from T. C. Williams School of Law in 1955 and began his career in law in Kenbridge. He was engaged in a number of business ventures and he and several associates built several buildings on South Main Street here during the 1950s.
    In 1988, he pleaded guilty to embezzling $170,000 from clients and was sentenced to five years in prison. He said he needed the money because his investments had proved unsuccessful. He promised to repay the money.
    He served only 10 months before being paroled and in 1995 was reinstated by the Virginia Supreme Court to practice law. He then worked for the Richmond firm of McEachin and Gee until his retirement five years ago.
    His survivors include his wife, Harriett Edmunds of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; one daughter, Jeanne Ringe of Topanga, CA; three sons, Tom Edmunds of Pleasanton, CA, Mark Edmunds of Lafayette, CA and Andy Edmunds of Richmond; three stepsons, George Bishop of Richmond, Dale Bishop of Cudjoe Key, FL and Randy Logue of Savannah, TN.
