Miss Dorothy Mae Jones, 96, of Crewe, died May 6, 2008.
She is survived by one sister, Lucy Ward of Crewe; three children,
Betty Oliver, James Jones and Ruby Pettis; eight grandchildren; 16
great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

Gloria Burr Moore, 86, of Crewe, died Friday, May 9, 2008. She was
the widow of Marshall Moore.
She is survived by four children, Marshall L. Moore of MD, Darlene
Hicks of Keysville, Carolyn DeNoon of Powhatan and Gail Whitten of
South Boston; one sister, Olive Bennett of Woodbridge; nine grandchildren; 17
great-grandchildren.

Gable
Mr. Conis Chadick Gable, 58, of Farmville, passed away Monday at
his residence. He was born March 25, 1950 in Crewe, Virginia. He was the son of
Bobbie Moore Gable and the late Conis Bennett Gable. He loved his early years,
growing up in his hometown of Crewe, Virginia.
He was the husband of Cyndi Potts Gable and they were married for
over 30 years. Conis worked as an auto body repair technician and an auto
painter many years with Fourth Street Motor Co. Conis had many joys in his life,
his love of modified racing; he loved going on vacations with family and friends
at the beach, he loved bringing a smile to other people through laughter and his
great sense of humor; he was known very much for his quick wit and he and Cyndi
loved antiquing on the weekends together.
He is survived by his mother; his wife; his son, Chadwick Aaron
Gable of Farmville; brother, Larry Bennett Gable of Chester; niece and nephew,
Carrie Dickerson of Crewe and Christopher Armistead of Prospect. He was preceded
in death by his father, Conis Bennett Gable.
A funeral service was held Thursday, May 8, 2008, 3:00 p.m. at the
chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in the Crewe Cemetery. Family
received friends Wednesday evening 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Puckett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lucy Ann Edmunds Traynham, 79, of Crewe, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008. She was
the widow of Thomas Tinsley Traynham, Jr.
She is survived by two sisters, Mary Plummer Humphrey of Midlothian and Jane
Castleton Powers of Darvills; one brother, Thomas Fitzgerald Edmunds, Jr., of
McKenney; three children, Thomas McIlwaine Traynham of Willis, Randolph Edmunds
Traynham of Mechanicsville and Lucy Sydnor Traynham Moore of Martinsville; and
seven grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 2 at Pryor Memorial
Presbyterian Church, Crewe, with interment at Concord Presbyterian Church in
Rawlings.

Dorothy S. Williams, 73, of Blackstone, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday,
April 30, 2008.
She is survived by her husband, Roger W. Williams; son, Joseph Kenzie Martin,
Jr., and his wife, Elizabeth; granddaughters, Aprill Nichole Jivelekas and
Jennifer Christine Martin; step-daughter, Juanita Lynn; step-sons, Arnold and
Wayne Williams; and other family members.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 2nd at Morrissett
Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge (Rt. 10). Interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

Irby
Thomas Ross Irby, Sr., (Tom Ross), 90 years old, of Kenbridge, Virginia went to
join the Lord and his Loving wife on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at McGuire VA
Hospital, Richmond, VA. Born April 1, 1918 in Lunenburg County, Virginia to
Thomas H. and Nannie M. Irby.
He joined Varick Chapel AME Zion Church at an early age. He was a devoted member
and was deeply involved in his community. He held numerous positions in the
church for over 70 years. In his early years, he attended Varick Chapel School,
then St. Emma Military Academy in Rock Castle, VA until 1942, when he joined the
US Army. In service to our country, he worked as a clerk, and airfield
controller. At the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1946, Tom Ross was honorably
discharged and received numerous medals, awards and commendations. He returned
home to help his father on the farm, where he soon started his own.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 55 years, Louisa
Winn Irby; his brother, John C. Irby; two sisters, Lucy Maxwell and Fannie Irby.
He is survived by two children, Koretha I. (John) Cumberbatch of Baltimore, MD
and T. Ross (Zelma) Irby of Blackstone, VA; six grandchildren, Cathy I. Ashley,
Latarsha Cumberbatch, Tony Curry, Jeff Curry, Bernard Pearson and Michael
Jefferson; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one
brother, James N. (Sarah) Irby of New York; and numerous nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends.

Mrs. Annie B. Wright, 98, of Blackstone, died May 1, 2008.
She is survived by five children, Floyd, Nathaniel, James, Curtis Pritchett and
Lois Moore; 32 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; 21

Dinwiddie, with interment in the church cemetery.

Hood
Thomas I. “Tom” Hood, 89, of Crewe, died Tuesday, April 22. He was
the widower of Kathleen B. Hood.
He is survived by two children, Ellen Kincheloe of Richmond and
Libby Hood of Midlothian; one grandson; one sister, Helen Aulick of Casa Grande,
AZ.
Mr. Hood was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, an engineer of N&S
Railroad and a member of the Crewe United Methodist Church.
Graveside services were held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 26th at Crewe Cemetery.

Melvin Randolph Claiborne, 59, of Blackstone, died April 23, 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Beverley Claiborne; two sons, Maurice
and Melvin, Jr.; his mother, Annie H. Claiborne; and a brother, Howard L.

She is survived by her daughters Margaret D. Foster of Victoria,

Burkeville, Joyce D. Newcomb of Victoria, Connie W. Gregory of Alton and Naomi

Terry Daniel of Keysville and Bobby Gene Daniel of Fla.; 35 grandchildren; 66
great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Zelma

Victory Baptist Church, Lunenburg with burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Victoria.

Tommie Lee Jackson, 82, of Victoria, died April 23, 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth H. Jackson; daughters, Teresa Keller of
Blackstone, Jo Ellen Sykes of Brodnax, Patty Epperson of Kenbridge, Mary Lewis
of Blackstone and Tammy Newcomb of Victoria; one son, Randy S. Jackson of
Richmond; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Jackson served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean
Conflict.

a.m. in Lakeview Cemetery, Victoria.

Franklin Wayne McDaniel, age 65, of Hampton, VA, formerly of Blackstone, passed
away Monday, April 21, 2008.
He is survived by a long time and loving companion, Laverne Taylor of Hampton;
two brothers, Lowry and Riley McDaniel, both of Blackstone; a special cousin,
Joanne Jones of Powhatan.
Mr. McDaniel was a U.S. Navy Veteran.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at St.
Mark’s United Methodist Church Cemetery, Crewe. The family is being served by
Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home, Blackstone.

Bagley
Wilson Wingold Bagley, 91, a retired farmer of Kenbridge, VA, died April 20,
2008.
He is survived by his wife, Edna A. Bagley; his daughter, Betsey Hendricks; his
son, Bobby Bagley, all of Kenbridge; three grandchildren; one great-grandson;
one brother, Marvin G. Bagley of Kenbridge.
Wilson was a former co-owner of Bagley’s Garage in Kenbridge, owned and operated
Bagley’s Peach Orchard and served on the Lunenburg County ASCS Community
Committee. Several years he was named Virginia’s Outstanding Tree Farmer.
He was a long time member of the Antioch United Methodist Church, where funeral
services were conducted Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in the
Kenbridge Cemetery.

Brooks
Myrtle Viar Brooks, 89, of Richmond, Virginia, formerly of Kenbridge, died
Wednesday, April 16, 2008. She was the widow of Norman Brooks.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Burt and Florence Brooks; her
grandchildren, Ben, Clay, Sam and Kelli of 57 Little Falls Lane, Rockville,
Virginia 23146. She is also survived by her sisters, Estelle Williams of
Richmond and Virginia Barr of Virginia Beach; several nieces and nephews, and
many good friends.
Myrtle grew up in Charlotte County, lived and worked in Lynchburg as a young
adult and then lived in Kenbridge for 43 years after marriage. For the past nine
years, she has resided in Richmond at the Imperial Plaza Community.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the
Kenbridge United Methodist Church. Interment in the Kenbridge Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of
Kenbridge United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 926, Kenbridge, VA 23944.

James “Red” Dickerson of Blackstone, VA died April 16, 2008 at his home. He was
born April 12, 1941 in Venice, Illinois. Was a veteran and retired steel worker.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include three daughters, Christa Price of Blackstone, VA, Cheryl
(William) White of Pontoon Beach, IL, and Malisa Flora of Wellsville, MO; one
brother, Wayne Dickerson of Greenville, IL; 10 grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Dickerson; wife,
Shirley Dickerson; wife, Jean Fritz; a brother, Donald Dickerson; a sister,
Betty Dickerson; and a great-grandson, William C. White III.

Meherrin; and eight grandchildren.

Howard Randall (Randy) Johnson, Jr., age 50, of Keysville died suddenly on
Saturday, April 12, 20008.
He is survived by his mother, Joyce Midkiff Johnson; two daughters, Jessica
Johnson and Aimee Johnson Hudson; son-in-law, Sam Hudson; two grandchildren,
Chris Johnson and Sarah Johnson; a sister, Sandy Riepe; nephew, Creigh Riepe;
grandmother, Sarah Midkiff and a special friend, Lisa Mason. His wife, Jackie
Wade Johnson; father, Howard Randall Johnson; two sons, Chris and Andy preceded
him in death.
Randy was employed at the Truck Driver Training School, Southside Virginia
Community College, in Blackstone, Virginia. Prior to his employment with SVCC,
he operated R&J Trucking Company.
Family visitation was held at the home at all times. Services were be held at
2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16th at Mt. Harmony United Methodist Church,
Keysville, Va.

Fisher
Lewis Gerald “Jerry” Fisher, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, formerly of Wilsons,
Virginia, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2008 after a very courageous battle
with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. He was preceded in death by his parents,
Virginia Elizabeth Lewis and William Roy Fisher, Sr., and his brother, William
Roy Fisher, Jr.
Mr. Fisher served as team manager in the LMSD Division of the Internal Revenue
Service for 38.5 years. Upon retirement, he volunteered for UPMC Passavant
Hospital, North Hills Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels and AARP Tax Service
Volunteer. He was an active member of Northmont Presbyterian Church where he
served as deacon, finance committee member, and as a member of the Child
Development Board.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Sallie Kate Beville Fisher;
his daughter, Anne Beville Fisher Funk (Shawn) of Wexford; two sons, Thomas
Patrick Fisher (Jenna) of N. Canton, OH and John Sydnor Fisher (Heather) of Pine
Twp.; four grandchildren, Rebekah and John Funk and Christopher and William
Fisher.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the
Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, Business Hwy 460 near Blackstone, with Rev. G. C.
Shepherd officiating. Interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone. The
family will receive friends from Noon until the time of the services at the
funeral home.

Benson
Mr. Donnie O. Benson, 72, passed away Monday, April 14, 2008 at Southside
Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Virginia.
He was born March 20, 1936 in Selma, NC to the late Johnny Oscar Benson and
Bular Elizabeth Capps Benson. He was a shop foreman for RTL in Petersburg, Va.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Lee Benson and his wife, Deana, of Wilsons, Va.,
Lonnie Dale Benson of Blackstone, Va., and one daughter, Donna Marie Cooper and
her husband, Michael Todd Cooper, of Mebane, NC. 10 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Donnie O. Benson, Jr., and Edward Donnie
Benson. The family would like to thank Duke Hospice for their great care in
which they provided.
