Inge
Benjamin J. Inge, age 93, of Crewe, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Lucille Inge and Margaret
I. Ritchie; and brothers, Ashley and Andrew Inge.
He is survived by a niece, Margaret Ritchie of Blackstone; and a nephew, George
Ritchie of Philadelphia, PA.
Mr. Inge was a retired hostler with Norfolk & Western Railroad and a retired
electrician from Ft. Pickett. During WWII, he worked at Portsmouth Naval
Shipyard. He was past Master of Crewe Lodge #123 AF & AM, past High Priest of
Tyrean Royal Arch Chapter #8, past Commander of Olivet Commandery #18 and a
member of the John Dove Society.
Visitiation was held 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, July 6, at Jennings-McMillian
Funeral Home with a Masonic service by Crewe Masonic Lodge #123 at 7:30 p.m.
Graveside funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 7, at Crewe
Cemetery. Pastor Jim Meisner officiated.

Walter Edward Belle, 65, of Crewe, died July 1, 2008.
He is survived by two sons, Eric Belle and Terry Bradshaw; two daughters, Rita
Bland and Tina Williams; 10 grandchildren; one brother, John E. Belle; four
sisters, Lucille Jackson, Alice Morgan, Edith Furman and Helen Stith.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 5, from Fourth Mt. Zion Baptist
Church, Crewe with interment in the Vaughan Family Cemetery, Crewe.

Emmett Hawkes, 90, of Blackstone, died July 1, 2008.
He is survived by two sons, James and Ronald Hawkes; three grandchildren; two
brothers, Napoleon and Floyd Hawkes; one sister, Lobelia Breland.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 7, from Virginia Veterans Chapel, Amelia
with interment in the Veterans Cemetery.

Henry Lowry Caldwell, 80, of Crewe, died, Friday, July 4, 2008.
Mr. Caldwell was an Army veteran and retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad, he
was also a life member of the Nottoway County Emergency Squad.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Hodges Caldwell; children, Kent Caldwell, Tammy
Barksdale of Crewe; brothers, C. B. Caldwell of Richmond, Clyde Caldwell of
Amelia; a sister, Muriel Vaughan of McKenney; four grandchildren; two
step-grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 6, at Trinity Memorial
Gardens, Rice.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., on Friday, July 11, at
Westminister-Canterbury in Richmond for Nancy Coleman, who died on July 1, 2008.
She was the widow of John T. Coleman and Charles C. Crowder. She was the former
Nancy Almand of Kenbridge.
She is survived by two sons, Charles C. Crowder and William A. Crowder; and four
grandchildren.
A private interment will be held in Kenbridge Heights Cemetery.

Octavia W. Rhodehamel, age 84, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008.
She is survived by a husband, Edward C. Rhodehamel; a daughter, Janice Budnik

Shelley Street and husband, Geoff; stepsons, Jeff Rhodehamel and wife, Kim, and
Charles Rhodehamel and wife, Jan; sisters, Virginia Orange and Nellie Hawthorne;
three grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.
Visitation was held 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 7, 2008 at

Methodist Church, 12401 Alderwoods Dr., Fairfax, VA. Interment 11:00 a.m.,
Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone.

Patsy Shell Thomas, of Richmond, died suddenly on July 1, 2008.
She is survived by her husband, Richard K. M. Thomas, Jr.; daughters, Kathy
Thomas Coon, Lynn Thomas Piland; son, Richard K. M. Thomas; eight grandchildren;
brother, Charles E. Shell; and sister, Mary Lou Branch. She was preceded in
death by her parents, William F. and Mary F. Shell.
She was a dedicated employee of the Jackson Company in Richmond for 30 years.
A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 5, followed by a
reception in the Church Commons at Bon Air United Methodist Church.

Walter Eugene Rawlings, Sr., 80, of Blackstone Va., died July 1, 2008. He was a
farmer and former co-owner and operator of Daniels and Rawlings Oil Company.
He is survived by his wife of fifty eight years, Martha Ann McDowell Rawlings;
two sons and a daughter-in-law, Walter Eugene, Jr. “Gene” and Karen Rawlings of
Alamogordo, NM and Michael Rawlings of Chesterfield and his fiancé, Vivian M.
Bergolc, of Cleveland, OH; one granddaughter, Stacye M. Rawlings of Dallas TX.
He was the uncle of the late Bobby McDowell.
Walter served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy.
Memorial services were held Saturday, July 5, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the
Perseverance Christian Church, Dundas, Va. Private burial.

Lavinia Blanks Allen of Monroe, La. went to be with her heavenly Father and
Savior on Monday, July 7, 2008.
Ms. Allen was born on November 30, 1924 in Blackstone, Va. to the late Mr. and
Mrs. James Leonard Blanks. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years,
Grover N. Allen.
Lavinia was a long-time member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Ms.
and worked for 25 years as manager of Town and Country Cleaners in Jackson. She
was devoted to her family, meeting the challenges of life with grace and
gleaning joy from the simple things of life.
Survivors include her daughter, Dianne A. Graham and husband, Michael F. Graham,
of Monroe, LA; her son, Robert N. Allen of Greenwood, MS; five grandchildren,
Michael A. Graham and wife, Jennifer; Lauren G Bailey and husband, Mike, all of
Monroe, LA.; Melanie Bonds and husband, Mark, of Birmingham, AL.; Beverly Allen
of Greenwood, MS. and Grover Allen of Vicksburg, MS; six great-grandchildren,
Beau and Katie Bailey, Caroline and Lauren Graham, Tara Bonds, and Sierra Allen;
one sister, Jane Daniel and husband, Tommy, of Blackstone, VA. and numerous
devoted nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Wilbur, and Clifton
Blanks; two sisters, Elizabeth Blanks and Florence Inge.
Funeral services for Ms. Allen were held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday July 9, 2008 in
the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, LA with Reverend Warren Eckhardt of
North Monroe Baptist Church officiating and the burial followed at 3:00 PM on
Wednesday July 9 in Sallis, Mississippi.
Special gratitude is given to Mrs. Allen’s long-time caregivers: Melba Moore,
Gwen Hollins, Dianne Handy, Virginia Johnson of Monroe, LA. and Vanessa Atkinson
of Jackson, MS. These ladies were not only Christian caregivers but also friends
and companions who lovingly watched over her and gave her comfort and joy in her
last nine years.

Kenneth W. “Kenny” Jones, 60, of Crewe, died Wednesday, June 25,
2008.
He is survived by one daughter, Alyson Jones Burke of Keysville;
his mother and step-father, Ruth and Gordon Cook of Crewe; two grandsons; and a
brother, Donald Jones of Green Bay.
Graveside funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June
28th at Crewe Cemetery.

Geraldine “Jerry” Jenkins, 81, of Crewe, died Friday, June 27,
2008. She was the widow of Ralph F. Jenkins.
She is survived by two sons, Howard R. Jenkins of Crewe, Charles
Glen Jenkins of Richmond; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a
brother and sister of PA.
Graveside funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 30,
at Crewe Cemetery.

James A. Sydnor;
Amelia leader
buried Saturday
A graveside funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June
28, in Blandford Cemetery, in Petersburg for James Allen Sydnor, retired Amelia
County merchant and former Postmaster, who died on June 18. He was 81.
For many years he owned Sydnor’s General Store at Mannboro, the
third generation to do so. He was Postmaster there and was a founder of the
Mannboro Medical Center. He served in the Navy during World War II.
He was a member of the Amelia Industrial Development Authority and
he was active in just about everything good for his rural area.
Mr. Sydnor is survived by his wife, Dorothy Sydnor; one daughter,
Mary Anne Glanzer of Chesapeake; three sons, James Allen Sydnor, Jr., of
Birmingham, Ala., William Culbreth Sydnor of Richmond and Benjamin Sebrell
Sydnor of Amelia; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Eva F. Johnson, 82, of Blackstone, died June 16, 2008.
She is survived by her two children, Connie J. Scott and Keith C.
Johnson; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Inez Tucker
and Lacy Cooke.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 21, from Mt. Gazerine
Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.

Martin
Ronnie Lee Martin, 66, of Crewe, went to be with our Lord Friday,
June 27, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Ron was born in Gaffney, SC and served in the U.S. Army as a flight
operator and aircraft maintenance. MSG Martin served two tours in Vietnam and
received four Bronze Stars and one Silver Star. Upon his discharge he served in
law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff in Lexington County, SC and as an Emergency
Dispatcher for Nottoway County Sheriff’s Department for the past 10 years. Ron
was known for his resourcefulness and his selfless dedication to the citizens of
Nottoway County and best known for his calm and skillful demeanor in emergency
situations.
He is survived by his dedicated wife, Rita G. Martin; beloved
children, Daniela and Adrian of South Carolina, Rachel and Stefan of Crewe; a
sister, Louise Brown and husband, Joe; a brother, Johnny Martin and wife, Gayle;
one granddaughter, Cashia; his sister-in-law, Joyce Inge and husband, Doug; and
his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Franklin and Marjorie Gunn of Crewe.
Funeral services were conducted 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 30, 2008 at
Bagby Memorial Baptist Church, Burkeville with interment in the church cemetery.
Reverend J. Clyde Shelton officiated. Military honors provided by the U.S. Army.
Visitation was held at the church one hour prior to the service.

Leonard
Mary Frances Winn Leonard, affectionately called “Granny,” 90, of
Sutherland, Virginia passed away on June 30, 2008. She was the daughter of the
late Samuel Edward and Mary Evelyn Prosise of Dinwiddie County and one of 19
children.
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Tommy McQuage. Her only
surviving sibling is her brother, Claude Hamilton Winn of Wilsons, VA and one
brother-in-law, William M. “Billy” Leonard, Sutherland, VA.
She had a long and loving marriage of 56 years to the late Carroll Gresham
“Mike” Leonard and is survived by two daughters, Anne L. Thomason and husband,
Lowell, and Nancy L. McQuage; six grandchildren, Marianne Darby and her husband,
Warren, Cheryl Bloor and her husband, Dan, Patty Sulc and her husband, Tommy,
Sandy Cain, Amy Albert and her husband, David; and one grandson, Kevin Thomason
and his wife, Marie; nine great-grandchildren, David and William Darby, Nicholas
Thomason, Jack, Ben and Christopher Bloor, Andrew and Alicia Sulc, Alex and
Austin Cain and Tristan Albert; hundreds of nieces and nephews.
Frances was a member of Ocran United Methodist Church for 70 years.
Frances was dearly loved by her large family and her many friends and neighbors.
She was known throughout her community for sharing her many talents with
everyone, sewing, cooking, decorating and gardening. If anyone needed a hand she
was there to provide help, whatever the circumstances. She will be remembered
for her generosity, her “take-charge” abilities, and her genuine caring nature.
She possessed one of God’s greatest gifts that of recognizing, enjoying and
sharing life’s simple and abundant treasures.
A celebration of her life will take place at Ocran United Methodist
Church, Sutherland, VA on July 2, 2008, 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Gene C. Tatum
and Rev. Harry B. Jones officiating. The family will receive friends prior to
the service at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Betsy Watson Russell; one son, Douglas

James Calvin Jordan, 82, of Victoria, Va. died June 27, 2008.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James R. “Ronnie” &
Susan P. Jordan of Kenbridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Irving
Hagaman of Victoria and Judy and Tommy Leonard of Macon, N.C; six grandchildren
and nine great grandchildren. He was also father of the late Richard B. “Ricky”
Jordan.

the Clarke Funeral Home, Kenbridge. Burial in Crestview Memorial Park, South
Hill, Va.

Gloria Reeves Beamer, 57, of Burkeville, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008.
She was a Seventh grade English teacher at Nottoway Middle School having
taught for over 32 years.
Gloria is survived by her husband, Ron Beamer; two daughters, April
Beamer of Burkeville and Mandy Arthur of Crewe; and two sisters, Pam Mitchell of
North Carolina and Cathy Wheeler of Crewe.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, July 3,
in the Crewe Cemetery.

Carla Sue Yates King, age 67, of Crewe, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2008.
She is survived by her husband, Jim King; two daughters, Sabrina King of San
Antonio, TX, Holly King Morris and husband, Wesley, of Jetersville; two
grandsons, Tyler and Hunter Morris; and one brother, Erman Yates of Pennington
Gap, VA.
Carla was a 1962 graduate of MCV School of Pharmacy and worked as a relief
pharmacist in Southside Virginia for many years, as well as Crittenden’s Drug
Store in Crewe, VA. She was a member of the Virginia Pharmacists Association and
a member of Crewe United Methodist Church. Carla enjoyed playing bridge, bird
watching and gardening.
Visitation was held at the Crewe United Methodist Church Thursday, June 19, 2008
from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Services were held 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 20th at
the church, with burial at Crewe Cemetery. Reverend John Brenneke officiated.
Memorial contributions may be made to Crewe United Methodist Church Repair Fund.

Rosa Scarborough Lafoon, 89, of Lawrenceville, Virginia, passed away June 17,
2008. She was born on June 7, 1919 to James Wiley Scarborough, Sr., and Maggie
Lee Browder Scarborough. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years,
Mallory Garland Lafoon.
She is survived by three children, Patricia Lambert and husband, Edward, of
Richmond, Virginia, Gay Graham and husband, Gary, of Blackstone, Virginia and
Garland Lafoon of Dolphin, Virginia. She is also survived by five grandchildren,
Courtney Weitz and husband, Eric, Candice Egle and husband, Darrell, Brittney
Lambert, Bryce Lafoon, Lorri Riddle and husband, Phil, and two
step-grandchildren, Brian Graham and wife, Christina, and Carrie Shelton and
husband, Brian. She is survived by five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Samantha,
Skylar, Hannah and Cassidy; and four step-great-grandchildren, Ty, Cody, Brooks
and Whitney. She is survived by one brother, Julian L. Scarborough and his wife,
Becky, of Lawrenceville, Virginia. She is predeceased in death by one brother,
James W. Scarborough, Jr.; and one sister, Elizabeth S. Hague. She is survived
by many devoted nieces and nephews, and two faithful caregivers, Lila and
Ernestine.
Her family meant everything to her. She was a loving wife, a dedicated mother to
her three children and a devoted “NaNa” to her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. She thoroughly enjoyed her life while she was in good
health.
Vistiation was held at Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville on Wednesday from
7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at
Williams Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Lawrenceville.

Huey W. Lloyd, age 94, of Blackstone, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008. He
was preceded in death by his wife, Emily May Lloyd. He was a retired
electrician.
He is survived by his daughter, Doris Skinner and her husband, Wayne, of
Blackstone; three grandchildren, Sheila Abernathy and her husband, Ben, James
Hammonds and his wife, Lynn, Jerry Hammonds and his wife, Patty; four
great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence Lloyd
of Lane, Kansas; and one sister, Virginia Nelson of Blackstone.
Visitation was held Friday, June 20, 2008 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at
Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home in Blackstone, VA. Funeral services were held
10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 2008 at the funeral home chapel. Interment
followed at Lakeview Cemetery.

McDaniel
Mrs. Lenni Lee McDaniel, 53, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 18, 2008 at
her home. Born in Princeton, New Jersey on June 20, 1954 to Leonard and Nancy
Adams Homan, she had lived in Thomasville for the past 13 years moving from
Blackstone, VA.
She was the manager for Kelly’s Rental Store and was a May 2008 graduate of
Guilford College. She was a member of Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed
kayaking, coaching softball and reading as well as fellowship times with her
church family.
Surviving are her mother, Nancy Adams Homan of Lexington; daughter, Niki
McDaniel and her friend, Jason Cubbage of Blackstone, VA; son, Carl Gavin
McDaniel and his wife, Tara, of Burkeville, VA; sisters, Wendy Bloxton of Church
Road, VA and Valerie Jean Homan of Farmville, VA; grandson, Gavin Ross McDaniel;
and a devoted friend, Kathy Palmore of Thomasville.
Funeral services were on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Wesleyan
Church “Connection Place” with Rev. Dr. E. Keith Carroll and Rev. Ken Klein
officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Wanda Raye Swisher Engle, “The Magnolia Girl,” spent her last 73 years bringing
love and joy to everyone she touched. She was a beloved wife, mother, friend,
and will abide with her Lord.
She worked at local banks, spent 15 years with the 3M Company and the last 17
years as general registrar for Nottoway County.
Wanda is survived by her husband, Robert; son, Raymond Beattie; daughter,
Victoria Walker; sisters, Donna Harrison and Jean-Ellen Kaminski; and several
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and two cats, “Sox,” and “Sasha.”
She will be laid to rest Thursday, June 26, at 3 p.m., at the Virginia Veterans
Cemetery in Amelia, Va.
Donations may be made to the Crewe Baptist Church, Nottoway Emergency Squad, and
local SPCA.

Donna Rhea Norton, 73, of Burkeville, died June 21, 2008 in Farmville. She was
the widow of Manuel Norton.
She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Nagy and Cheryl Owen; four
grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis Robertson, Dorothy Tatum, Barbara Wilmoth; and
one brother, W. D. Perdieu.
Graveside services were held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 22 at Trinity Memorial
Gardens, Rice.

Thomas C. Wright
buried Tuesday
in Victoria
Graveside funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday in Lakeview Cemetery
in Victoria for Thomas C. Wright, retired owner of Wright’s Superette in that
community. He died last Sunday. He was 86.
Before building his supermarket, Mr. Wright worked 27 years for the old
Virginian Railroad. He was a native of Purdy in Greensville County. He served in
the 778th Tank Battalion in Europe during World War II. He was a member of
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9954, and the Arrowhead Gun Club and the Doodlum
Hunt Club.
He is survived by one son, Del. Thomas C. Wright, Jr., of Victoria; two
daughters, Joyce W. Blythe of Chesterfield County and Margaret W. Hornbeck of
Leesburg; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
