Robert House;

   Funeral services for Robert M. House, 80, of Rawlings, a retired employee of Virginia Farm Bureau, who was killed July 30, 2008 in an automobile accident, were held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, August 4 at Lebanon United Methodist Church, Rawlings. Burial was in the Howerton Family Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
   Mr. House was an Army veteran and he was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Cora Coleman House; a daughter, Shella H. Duke; one son, Larry House; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ellett

   Willie P. Ellett, of Burkeville, born October 23, 1921, son of the late Charlie and Ethel Ellett, passed away suddenly, July 21, 2008.
   He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Blanche Sexton Ellett; one daughter, Gloria Blanche Wilson and her husband, Tom, of Seaford, VA; and one son, Willie P. Ellett, Jr., and his wife, Wendy St. Pierre Ellett, of Burkeville, VA. Willie had four grandchildren, Nikki Jenkins of Gonzales, La., Brian Wilson of Seaford, VA. and Kati and Kaysi Ellett of Burkeville, VA.
   He was a WWII veteran and loyal member of the VFW in Crewe. He was also a devoted member of the Crewe Baptist Church.
   Visitation was held Tuesday night, July 22 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home in Crewe, VA. Funeral services were held at graveside in the Crewe Cemetery, Wednesday, July 23 at 10:00 a.m. 8-14-1tc

Service held
for Sam Sanger
at Crenshaw


   A memorial service was held Tuesday, August 12, at Crenshaw United Methodist Church here for Samuel Frederick Sanger, 94, of Blackstone, who died on August 9, 2008.
   He was a former 4-H Extension Agent, serving in Lunenburg County among other places. He was at one time manager of the Cooperative Fertilizer Purchasers located in Kenbridge. Early in his career he was a salesman for Wirtmore Feeds, and also taught school. Until recent years he raised cattle on the family farm south of Blackstone.
   He was predeceased by his wife, Mollie Fletcher Walker Sanger. He is survived by a son, S. F. “Fred” Sanger of Blackstone; two daughters, Lucy Robinson of Big Stone Gap and Jamie S. Hawley of Blackstone; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth E. Sanger and Elizabeth Spitler.

Morgan

   Miss Mary J. Morgan, 81, of Blackstone, died August 6, 2008.
  She is survived by one daughter, Dorena Stokes; two sons, Clarence and Jerome Morgan, all of Blackstone; two sisters, Edna Cummings and Ellen Jones; five brothers, Griffin, Leroy, John, Dennis and Jimmy Morgan.
   Funeral services were held Monday, August 11th at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.

   Mrs. Annie F. Smith, 82, of Blackstone, died August 7, 2008.
   She is survived by a daughter, Susan S. Hawkes; one son, Kenneth W. Smith; two grandchildren; sisters, Dollie Stith, Mary Rhodes, Rebecca Parker; brothers, Lorenzo, Samuel, William and Bernard Fitzgerald.
   Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, August 13th at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Blackstone with interment in Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.

   Mrs. Mary Christabelle Thompkins, 84, of Blackstone, died August 8, 2008.
   She is survived by two sisters, Eva Fowlkes and Fannie Rather.
  Funeral services were held Thursday, August 14th at Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.

Ingram

   Pearl Robertson Ingram, age 81, of Crewe, widow of Boxley T. “Butch” Ingram, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2008.
   She was the loving mother of four children, Carolyn Johnson of Chester, Brenda Hart and husband, Mike, of Crewe, William Taylor Ingram and wife, Nancy, of Crewe, Patricia Epperly and husband, W.J., of Blue Ridge; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Virginia Gunn of Blackstone.
   Visitation was held 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 31st at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Crewe.
   Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 1st at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.

Maitland

   William Howard “Pork Chop” Maitland, 82, of Wilsons, VA went to be with the Lord on July 31, 2008. He was born in Dinwiddie County, VA on June 13, 1926 to Dora Heath Maitland and William Allen Maitland.
   He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Lucy Townsend Maitland; his children, William Larry Maitland (Stephany) of Stony Creek, Connie Lou Faison (Brian) of Charlottesville, Howard Bruce Maitland (Jeannie) of Wilsons, and John Steven Maitland (Mary) of Ford. Also grandchildren, Kim Mayton, Lisa Kenimer, Jacob Faison, Wade Maitland, Jesse Faison, Forest Maitland, Cory Faison, Travis Faison, Samantha Maitland, Benjamin Maitland, Garrett Maitland, Emily Maitland; and seven great-grandchildren.
   Willie Howard attended Darvills School and graduated from Sunnyside McKenney High School. He was a member of Butterwood United Methodist Church. He founded Little League Baseball, Little League Football and Little League Basketball in Dinwiddie County. He was a member of the Dinwiddie County Rescue Squad for several years, a member of Darvills Ruritan Club, and the Dinwiddie County High School Booster Club. In 1987, he received the Governor’s Award for Volunteering Excellence for Youth Sports. He had a career in construction and farming.
   Visitation was held at 6:00 p.m., Saturday, August 2nd at Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home, 1400 S. Main Street, Blackstone, VA. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 3rd at Butterwood United Methodist Church, Darvills, VA with interment in the church cemetery.

Ellett

   Willie P. Ellett, 86, of Burkeville, died suddenly July 21, 2008.
   He is survived by his wife, Blanche Saxton Ellett; one daughter, Gloria Blanche Wilson of Seaford; one son, Willie P. Ellett, Jr., of Burkeville; and four grandchildren.
   He was a WWII veteran and loyal member of the VFW in Crewe. He was also a devoted member of the Crewe Baptist Church.
   Funeral services were held at graveside in the Crewe Cemetery, Wednesday, July 23rd at 10:00 a.m.

   Gladys Tomlinson Smith, 82, of Fruitland Park, Florida, formerly of Victoria, died July 30, 2008.
   She is survived by her husband, Clarence D. Smith; two sisters, Estelle T. Scruggs of Norfolk and Inez T. Faris of Chesapeake; two brothers, Henderson L. Tomlinson of Norfolk and Lacy W. Tomlinson of Victoria.
   Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, August 5, 11:00 a.m. at Staples Funeral Home, Victoria with interment in the Tomlinson Family Cemetery, Victoria.

Whittington

   Joseph Wayne Whittington, 72, of Green Bay, died August 2, 2008. He was a retired correctional officer with the Virginia Department of Corrections and also served his country and retired from the U. S. Navy with 25 years of service.
   He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Whittington; a daughter, Cheryle Whittington Parrish of Victoria; a son, Joseph Wayne Whittington, Jr., of Elkton, Maryland; four grandchildren.
   Graveside funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 6, at 10:00 a.m. in the Whittington Family Cemetery, 2994 Bethel Church Road, Green Bay. Military rites were provided by the Keysville American Legion, Post 260 Honor Guard.

   Mrs. Clara W. Fitzgerald, 87, of Burkeville, died July 24, 2008.
   She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Webster; four grandsons.
   Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 30, from Macedonia Baptist Church, Burkeville with interment in the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery, Blackstone.

    Mrs. Neldonia Hardy Tucker, 52, of Blackstone, died July 20, 2008
   She is survived by her husband, Francis Tucker; daughter, Tiana Tucker; father and mother, Herbert and Rozelia Hardy; a sister, Gwen Tuck; brothers, Herbert and Alfonza Hardy.

   Franklin Robert Todd, 58, of Crewe, died July 20, 2008.
   He is survived by his wife, Christine Todd; five children, Tamara Ramsey, Freda Perry, Franklin Todd, Jr., Adrienne Stokes and Antonio Todd; 18 grandchildren; two sisters, Alice T. Christopher and Shirley Todd.

   Allie Jaunita Bishop Weatherford, 82, went to be with the Lord July 27, 2008.
   She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Trevathan of Georgia and Janet Eanes of Crewe; one son, Tom Weatherford and wife, Mary, of Big Island; six sisters, Genell Butler, Annabelle Davis and husband, Durwood, of Richmond, Ola Wilkerson and husband, Roy, Christine Austin, all of Crewe, Fay Austin and husband, Abe, of Amelia, and Bonnie and husband, Hobert, of Buckingham; one brother, J.C. Bishop and wife, Laura, of Crewe; three granddaughters, Margaret Trevathan and husband, Gale Plano, of Hawaii, Nina Weatherford of Bedford, and Nicole Clayton of Richmond; three grandsons, Michael Trevathan and wife, Robin, of Georgia, Chuck Eanes of Crewe and Jeff Eanes of Blackstone; two great-grandsons, Robbie and Zach Trevathan and one great-granddaughter, Jaden Heath; and two special great-grandsons, Nathan and Matthew; and also a stepson, John Weatherford of Dunn, NC.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, A. C. and Robbie Bishop; two brothers, Rufus and Jessie Bishop; a grandson, James Weatherford; and daughter-in-law, Patsy.
   Visitation was held Tuesday, July 29th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 30, 11:00 a.m. at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Crewe, VA. Interment at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice. 7-31-1tc

Barlow

   Billie Lou Barlow, 80, of Crewe, died Monday, July 28, 2008.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Barlow. She is survived by daughters, Carolyn Atkins and Patricia Hayer, all of Crewe; sons, Mike Barlow and Kevin Barlow of Crewe; sisters, Jean Blankenship of Winchester and Donna Turner; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 30, 2:00 p.m. at the Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Crewe Cemetery.

Sahl

   Jean Elizabeth Pittenger Sahl, 84, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008 in Bethesda, Maryland after a brief illness.
   The daughter of Reno Pittenger and Gertrude Sheriff Pittenger, she was born in Mechanisburg, Pennsylvania. She was raised in Hollis on Long Island, New York where she graduated from Jamaica High School.
She married her high school sweetheart, Fredrick Sahl, a cadet in the Army Air Corps. Together they traveled widely during Fred’s career as an officer in the Air Force, living for a while in Hawaii and later in Germany. Jean was an accomplished seamstress and bridge player, and did some modeling while living in Germany.
   In retirement they moved to Poole Siding, Virginia where they lived for more than 20 years before relocating to Chesterfield, VA. After Fred’s death in 2005 Jean moved to Bethesda, Maryland.
   She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Ingersoll of Bethesda, and Betsy Davis of Blackstone; two grandchildren, Sam Davis and Jennifer Davis; and two great-grandsons, Adam and Cody.
   A private funeral service will be held on September 9th at Arlington National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with Fred.

Shepherd

   Reverend Gaynor Curtis “G.C.” Shepherd, 70, of Wilsons, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008.
   G.C. was a retired minister of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church and employee of Joseph McMillian Funeral Home near Blackstone. He was past Master of Amelia Lodge #101 A.F. & A.M. and member of the Royal Arch Masons.
   G.C. is survived by his wife, Geneva Ayers Shepherd; three sons, Curtis O. Shepherd of Blackstone, David M. Shepherd of Wilsons and Reverend Thomas B. Shepherd of Stuart; and a daughter, Deborah S. Barnes of Blackstone. He is also survived by his brothers, Julius of Roanoke, Calvin of Montvale, Ruben of South Carolina, Joe of Phenix and Lloyd Shepherd of Victoria; his sisters, Hilda Johnson of Charlotte Court House, Christaline McCutcheon of Bedford, Eilene Conner of Montvale, Linda Crouch of Roanoke, Dori Kim of Fredericksburg and Shirley Blanton of Cullen; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were held Saturday, July 19th, 11:00 a.m. at Crenshaw United Methodist Church, Blackstone. Interment followed in Grace Methodist Church Cemetery, Wilsons.

   Benjamin Clark, 68, of Blackstone, died July 17, 2008.
   He is survived by his wife, Rosa Lee Clark; two children, Helen Oliver and Olivia Friend; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Annie Graise, Hattie Brown and Elizabeth Davis.
  Funeral services were held Saturday, July 19, from Jerusalem Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.

   Marshall Thomas Longworth, Jr., 86, of Blackstone, died Friday, July 18, 2008. He was a WWII Air Force veteran, VFW member, and retired firefighter.
   Surviving are his children, Kathleen Haug of Blackstone, Peggy Platt of Cumberland, MD and Marshall T. Longworth III of Albany, NY; 11 grandchildren; brother, Daniel Longworth; and sister, Dorothy Coale.
   Funeral services were held at Crenshaw United Methodist Church, Blackstone, Monday, July 21, at 1:00 p.m. Interment was at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia.

   Lewis Bernard Francis, 88, of Blackstone, died Sunday, July 20, 2008.
   He is survived by his wife, Doris K. Francis; one daughter, Patricia Sides of Utah; and two grandchildren.

   Marion Moore Freeman, age 66, of Blackstone, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008.
   She is survived by her sister, Ann Freeman Via and husband, Conrad; a nephew, David Via and wife, Tina, and their son, Nathan, all of Glen Allen; a niece, Robin Diaz and husband, Jorge, and their children, Dareck, Gabriel and Noah, all of Costa Rica; a niece, Catherine Burzio and husband, Bret, and their children, Ashton, John Bret and August, all of Berryville, VA; and a number of cousins. Marion was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. Dr. W. Carroll and Helen Forbes Freeman; and a great-niece, Pauline Burzio.
   Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Crenshaw United Methodist Church, Blackstone. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services. Interment private at Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone.

   Mrs. Felicia Brooks Hobbs, 41, of Philadelphia and formerly of Crewe, died July 6, 2008.
   She is survived by her mother, Josephine W. Coleman; father, Sam Brooks; son, Xavier Crump; husband, Dennis Hobbs; brothers, Samuel and Tyrone; and grandfather, Frank Carter.
   Funeral services were held Saturday, July 12th at Dominion Worship Center in Crewe with interment in the Jackson Cemetery, Crewe.

Daniel

   Dennis Lee “Coonie” Daniel, 60, of Danieltown, VA died July 13, 2008. Dennis Lee was a Professor at Southside Virginia Community College and a farmer.
   He is survived by his sons, David Daniel, Ken Daniel, John Daniel (U.S. Marines), Anthony Daniel (U.S. Marines), all of Danieltown and Buck Johnson of Blackstone; his grandsons, David Dennis Daniel, James Tyler Daniel and Will Johnson; his mother, Maude L. Daniel of Danieltown; his sisters, Dianne D. White of Winston-Salem, NC and Carolyn D. Clary of Danieltown; his brother, David Dean Daniel of Midlothian.
   Funeral services were conducted 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, in the Rocky Run United Methodist Church, Alberta, with burial in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the Clarke Funeral Home, Kenbridge, on Tuesday from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

Babb

   Robert F. “Bob” Babb, 79, of Marshalls Creek, PA passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at home after a fierce battle with cancer. He was the son of Mary and James Babb, born June 28, 1929 and grew up in Baldwin, L.I., NY, where he retired after 37 years with the Baldwin School District as an Elementary School teacher, principal, mentor and benefactor. He was instrumental in the “Beautiful Baldwin” project and earned the nickname “Mr. Marigold.” He spent his summers as a bus driver, head counselor and supervisor with the Pierce Camps in Roslyn, NY. He served as Sunday School teacher to young adults for over 10 years at the First Methodist Church in Baldwin, NY.
   Bob earned his Bachelor and Master’s degrees in French, math and education from Hofstra University, where he also starred on the school’s baseball team. He served in the Korean War in Europe with the 66th Counter Intelligence Corp. Active in the Rotary Club, he served as secretary, president and earned the Paul Harris Fellow Ward. He was an organizer and participant with the annual Rotary Track and Field Event for the Baldwin school system.
   Retirement included being an avid Yankees fan, volunteering tireless hours with the Mountain Manor Golf Club (where he hit a hole in one in 2000), Delta Society Pet Partners project, Monroe County Hospice and the Virginia Occupational Therapy Association, among others.
Bob leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Harriette; his son, Robert, of Pleasanton, CA; his daughter, Holly of Crewe, VA; grandchildren, James Robert Babb and Kimberly Anne Brown.
   There are no services planned at this time.
