    Ms. Grace Rhodes of Blackstone/Chesterfield, along with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Rhodes of Blackstone, announces the engagement of her daughter, Miss Dominique Chantel Rhodes of Blackstone, to Mr. Dwayne S Morris, Jr. of Lawrenceville, son of Dwayne and Linda Morris of Lawrenceville.
    Miss Rhodes is a 2005 graduate of Nottoway County High School and a transfer student to Saint Paul's College from SVCC. She is majoring in General Studies of Natural Science and Mathematics with an endorsement in Elementary Education.
    Mr. Morris is a 2004 Graduate of the Refuge Temple Christian Academy, and a 2008 honors graduate of St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville. He is a first year teacher in Nottoway County Public Schools.
    The August 9, 2008 wedding will take place at 1:00 p.m. at the Refuge Temple Ministries located at 14330 Boydton Plank Road in Warfield. The couple will reside in Lawrenceville.

    Newsnote: As I write my column this morning, the weather gives a hint of Fall. Absolutely perfect!
    The United Methodist Women of Butterwood United Methodist Church will meet on Tuesday, August 12th at 10:00 a.m. The meeting to be held at the Darvills residence of Jackie and Jean Powers.
    The Annual Lawn Supper at Grace United Methodist Church is scheduled on Saturday, August 23rd beginning at 5:00 p.m. The church is located on Highway #460 in the Wilsons area.
    Members of Sharon Baptist Church scheduled a breakfast to be served in the Fellowship Hall on August 31st the 5th Sunday of each month at 8:30 a.m. Choir practice is held each Wednesday evening (unless otherwise notified) at 7:30 p.m.
Darvills Ruritans announced that their 2nd Annual Pork Fest will be held on Saturday, September 13th. Tickets are now available from the Darvills Ruritan members.
    Happy birthday greetings to Mr. Richard Avery, Grayson Michael Rose, Taylor Madison Davis, Debbie Marston, Ethma Davis and Tyrus Martin celebrating their “special day” this week.
    Congratulations to Judy and Gordon Barnes on their wedding anniversary this week.
    Mr. J. E. Riddle has been discharged from the hospital and is now convalescing at his home.
    Our heartfelt sincere condolences is extended to the family of Mr. Willie Howard Maitland on his passing on Thursday, July 31, 2008. Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 3rd at Butterwood United Methodist Church with

interment in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Mary Andrews and her mother, Mrs. Beth Roberts, residents of Pembroke, were overnight guests during the weekend at the home of Mrs. Nancy Winn.
    Friday, Mr. and Mrs. John Moody were guests at the Lake Gaston summer home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Rannels, and daughter, Miss Allison. They all enjoyed the day boat riding on the lake.
    Mrs. Charlotte Gauldin and Mr. John Queensberry dined and danced at the Manchester Moose Lodge on Saturday evening.
    Sunday, Mrs. Johnny Sprouse and daughter, little Miss Jessica Anne, residents of Colonial Heights, visited April’s mother, Mrs. Charlotte Gauldin. During the afternoon they attended the funeral of Mr. Willie Howard Maitland.
    Mrs. Elsie Motley, a resident of Richmond, was a guest for several days at the Wilsons residence of her sister, Mrs. Claudene Taylor. Mrs. John Moody was a visitor at the Claudene Taylor residence.
    Mr. Jerry Barnes, a resident of Troutville, was a guest during the weekend at the home of his mother, Mrs. Allie Mae Barnes, and brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Judy Barnes. Ms. Sheryl Rotherford and friend, Jerry, were visitors of Mrs. Allie Mae Barnes on Saturday afternoon.
    Mrs. John Kafka and son, Tryus, residents of Darvills, visited Mrs. Nancy Martin at the Enon, home of Mrs. Martin’s son.
    Miss Holly Reese of Petersburg was an overnight guest during the weekend at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Betty Reese.

    The Blackstone High School Alumni Association met last Monday night at Blackstone Presbyterian Church, with President Leroy Bradshaw, BHS Class of ‘62, presiding. The BHSAA is working on a website and it is hoped that it will be up and running very soon. Carolyn Parrish Bowman, BHS ’70, Susan Barnes Roberts, BHS ’68, and Tuckie Spindler Kile, BHS ’67, are working on a Fall ’08 Edition of The Ram’s Horn. Several new features will be added to the BHS newspaper: Alumni News and BHS Memories. All former Rams are asked to e-mail BHS alumni news, as well as their own funny or nostalgic BHS memory, to tuckers16@embarqmail.com. BHSAA is also collecting BHS memorabilia and encourages all alumni to consider donating their BHS memorabilia to the Alumni Association. The BHSAA would particularly like to have copies of The Ram’s Horn or any of its predecessor school papers, as these newspapers are a great source of BHS history.
    The Kenston Forest School Classes of 1967-1979 held a reunion on the school campus on Saturday, August 2nd. Dinner, dancing, and great conversation provided a memorable night for all who attended. More than 200 people attended, including alumni from California, Florida, Texas, New York, and North Carolina.
    Ms. Margaret Milroy and her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Perkins of Alton, spend several days last week at the Historic Cavalier Hotel at Virginia Beach.
    Mary Buntin and her husband, Ken Schaal, were in Blackstone last weekend to attend her reunion at Kenston Forest School. They spent Saturday night with her parents, Bob and June Buntin, before returning to Ashland on Sunday.
    On Friday evening, Red Hatter Gail Wells hosted a 50th birthday party for her fellow Bodacious Blackstone Babe, Carmela Picone, whose birthday was Saturday, August 2nd. Other Babes enjoying the celebration were Sue Cobbs, Joyce Taylor, Carolyn Bowman, Teresa Keller, Susan Nash, Linda Ellington, Peggy Nichols, Libby Parrish, and Tuckie Kile.
    John, Ella, Heather, and Jacob Schellhaus spent the weekend in Cumberland, Maryland, as the guests of John’s parents. While there, they attended the 25th wedding anniversary celebration of John’s brother, Steve, and Debbie Schellhaus. Accompanying John and Ella were Janine Castle and Jonathan Stacy.
    Kim Castle, Stephanie Young, Edwina Camden and Nancy Blalock dined at Acapulco Mexican Grill for lunch on Saturday.
    Katherine Steveson of Fredericksburg spent several days with Billy and Daphne Norlfeet last week. Etna Golden visited with Katherine and Joyce Van Cleef at the Norfleets on Wednesday. Edna and Gabby Saul visited with them on Thursday. Jean Davidson and granddaughter, Brooklyn, of Chesterfield and Barbara Davis of Ford visited with Katherine and Joyce at the Norfleet home on Saturday.
    Guy and Sandra Willis of Stafford enjoyed dinner out with Zona and Reid Duncanson and Daphne Norfleet and Katherine Stevenson on Saturday, then returned home with her mother, Katherine.
    Joyce VanCleef returned home Sunday after a two-week visit with Billy and Daphne Norfleet.
    Greta and Noel Simons were surprised with a 43rd anniversary party given at the home of Robin, Johnny, Sydney, and Mackenzie Harmon. Guests included: Marvin and Margaret Springston, David Hawkes, Gladys Drinkwater, Elsie and Dennis Garrett, Sarah and Ed Eck, Mary Coleman, “Teeny” Coleman, Diane Galbreath and her granddaughter, Olivia, Pat and Ken Billings, Harvey Hairfield, David Shepherd, Jane Myers, Debra Copeland and David, Mary Sue Wilson, Lewis Custer, John and Judy Brooks, Glenn and Linda Ford, and Allen & Staci Henshaw. Guests enjoyed cake and ice cream. Granddaughter, Sydney, was very excited she kept the surprise from Grandma and Grandpa.
    Sterling Cole enjoyed the Crosby, Stills and Nash Concert at the Charlottesville Ampitheatre. He was the guest of his Aunt Kristen Ketron and cousin, Nathan, of Paris, France.
    Mrs. Daphne Cole had a celebratory lunch at the Cheesecake Factory with Sherry Edgerton of Chesterfield after winning their matches against Raintree 6.5 Combo Doubles Tennis, placing the team in first place in their division. Mrs. Cole also celebrated the end of Seniors Doubles season with Carol Anderson, her doubles partner, at the home of Mrs. Sharon Ryan of River Road, Richmond, with lunch and a pool get-together.
    Bob Grizzard and his wife, Teresa of Macon, Georgia (formerly of Kenbridge) and their son, Kasey Grizzard of Raleigh, NC, visited with his aunts,Virginia Cole and Gene Grabeal, as well as his cousins, Jerry Cole, his wife, Daphne, and their son, Sterling, and Johnny Cole and his wife, Kathy.
    Frank Yancey and Blackstone natives Empsy Williams Munden and Cindy Vaughan Shilan were among the attendees at the Annual Virginia Pharmacists Association Meeting recently held in Virginia Beach.
   Will and Nancy Pierce and Bob and Barbara Henkel have returned home following a month-long cross-country vacation.
   Debbie Carson and her husband, George Marshall, and their daughter, Elizabeth, of London, England, are visiting with her mother, Sarah Carson for the next two weeks. They arrived in Washington last Monday and spent some time sightseeing in Washington before going to Charlottesville to visit Monticello. They also spent time in Lynchburg with her sister and brother- in-law, Beth and Ben Reeves and their children, Will and Carson. On Saturday, they all went to Smith Mountain Lake for a Gambrell Family
    Reunion, along with Sally, Chuck, John, and Kate Beale.
   James and Devon Rohr of Richmond were dinner guests of Gail and Bobby Wells on Sunday evening. The dinner was a late celebration of James’ July birthday.
    Ava Martin spent several days last week with her grandparents, Moyer and Sharon Webb. Moyer & Sharon were happy to have Nicole and Ava Martin, Glenn, Carrie, Caleb, Brendan, Abby and Aydan visiting with them on Saturday. A great time was had by everyone in and around the pool.
    Billy and Joyce Coleburn and their daughters, Caroline and Mary Katherine, returned home Saturday night after spending a week at Myrtle Beach, SC. They enjoyed seeing Mr. Coleburn’s brother-in-law, Bob Motley, and his son, Robert. Accompanying the Coleburns were Mrs. Coleburn’s sister, Gayle Anzolut, of Harrisburg, PA.
    Randy and Tuckie Kile spent Saturday afternoon in Richmond. They had dinner at TGI Friday’s in Midlothian before returning home.
