A musician who grew-up in Blackstone has been nominated for a Grammy Award — an accomplishment believed to be a first for Nottoway County.

Matthew Alexander Bagley, who performs as “Alexander Mac,” was nominated in the category of Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. Bagley produced “Words for Days, Vol. 1,” by art- ist Mad Skills.

Released in August 2025, the album is a collection of tracks that each correspond to a day of the week, featuring guest artists including Estelle, Gavin Williams, and B-Lovee.

A 2011 graduate of Nottoway High School, Bagley resides in Richmond, “where I make most of my records in my home studio,” he told the Courier-Record this week.

“Right now, I’m finishing up an album and will be releasing the next single from it on Nov. 28th…I’ve also been producing and writing for other people as well as TV.”

The son of Rev. Raleigh & Peaches Bagley of Blackstone, Bagley is a singer, rapper, and producer, who this past August made the front page of the Richmond Times-Dispatch in advance of the capital city’s annual Richmond Jazz & Music Festival.

A 2015 graduate of Radford University, Bagley told the Courier-Record in August, “After college, I worked in IT while building my music career. During part of that early stage of my career, I was actually living in Blackstone and traveling to wherever I needed to be. I’m currently releasing music independently as of right this second, but we have some big things happening and working in the background as a result of building the brand up over time.” Big things indeed.

The awards ceremony is set for Feb. 1st at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, CA and will be broadcast on CBS. Winners will be determined by the Recording Academy’s Voting Members — a peer group composed of music creators, including artists, songwriters, producers, engineers, and more.
