DUO AVOID CAPTURE

Frustrating two-hour foot pursuit

Lawmen from Nottoway County and other local agencies spent two hours last week in Burkeville chasing two men in the snow.

The foot pursuit went back-and-forth along Rt. 460/360, Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks, and the parking lots of several businesses. The two suspects were spotted several times by police but avoided capture.

The incident occurred last Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 27th, shortly after 5:00 p.m. It involves a man allegedly taking his girlfriend’s car, a black Lincoln, without her permission for more than 24 hours.

Sheriff Robert Jones said that while a deputy sheriff was taking a report, the boyfriend called and said he was on his way back with the car.

That vehicle was observed moments later traveling west through Crewe by Deputy Police Chief Ronnie Hite.

A deputy observed the car coming into Burkeville, got behind it, and planned to follow the car to the complainant’s residence.

But Sheriff Jones said the car turned onto Lewiston Plank Road (Rt. 723), then onto Inverness Road and into a private driveway other than the girlfriend’s. Jones said the deputy sheriff pulled-in behind the car, and two passengers bolted and ran. The driver was immediately detained.

Jones said that while officers were searching for the two passengers, a bag of suspected narcotics was discovered where the suspects had been running in the snow. The black Lincoln was searched and returned to the female owner.

Jones said that at 7:11 p.m., officers received information that the two male passengers were no longer in the area, and all units cleared from the scene. “The investigation is ongoing,” said Jones.
