Swimming pool?

Fix the armory!

Dear Sir:

I have lived all of my life in Blackstone until recently, but I still consider Blackstone my home. I have never heard of so much controversy going on about the Armory.

From what I have heard, the Armory is all about a racial thing. PEOPLE, stop living in the past and show your children and grandchildren how to get along with each other.

When the Armory was used for a skating rink, and the Rec. Assoc. used it for basketball, you didn’t hear any bickering back-and-forth whether to use it or not.

Blackstone is the only town in the County that doesn’t have a community center. There’s nowhere in Blackstone to hold a big event besides the Officer’s Club at Fort Pickett, and that gets booked-up a year ahead of time.

A pool might be fine, but you have to look at the big picture here. If it’s an outdoor pool, it will only be used three to four months out of the year. If it’s an indoor pool, the electricity to run it will be outrageous. Either way, you will have to have a full-time life guard, and I’m sure that for a child under 18, a parent will have to stay with them. How many parents can you say will bring their child to the pool during the winter months and stay while they swim?

If all the people that are against the Armory would just go and help out a day or so, they could see the potential in the building.

In my opinion, fixing-up the Armory to use as a local community center and other purposes is a great idea. Especially if you look down the road where it will help bring business into town. Fix the armory.
