Courier-Record Readers Express Their Opinions

Important parts of local history

Dear Sir:

Over 20 years ago. I was asked to value a house that had been occupied by the late John Simmons. His family operated a country store just west of Blackstone on 460 Business (Old Nottoway Road), and the house was about a mile or so away.

While in the house, I noticed a military foot locker that gave his name and TUSKEGEE AIRMEN. There were other items that also indicated the same. I think he was an enlisted man.

The late Richard Carmichael later mentioned to me that he would like to see a local venue that would show items of black history in this area. I mentioned this to him.
