Mixed Schools Open Today in Nottoway
Back in 1965, there was both anticipation and anxiety when, for the first time, black children could attend formerly all-white schools in Nottoway County.
These clippings are from our September 2, 1965 front page. “Mixing” that year took place without any incidents.
Nottoway County was one of the first school districts in the state to sign a pledge agreeing to follow rules for desegregating its schools established by the Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW).
