A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION FOR ‘19
Since it is Christmas, I propose a truce.
Certainly, if soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force and the Germans, who were in trenches just yards apart and had been killing each other, could hold a truce in World War 1 on Christmas and Boxing days in 1914, we politicos can certainly do so on Christmas 2018 and beyond.
The BEF and Germans discovered that they had much in common and, in reality, were fighting for causes that didn’t greatly affect them. Instead, they were fighting because someone they never met ordered them to do so.
We (including myself) often get so emotionally involved in politics that we forget that Americans are just that.
Not rural or urban Americans -- not rich or poor Americans -- not southern or northern Americans -- not Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, or Hindu Americans. We are just Americans.
