Locals offer perspectives on bases named after Confederate generals

Not one but two Blackstone residents were featured last week in a national tribute to veterans published by USA Today.

Gail Black, who served 25 years in the U. S. Army and National Guard, and retired Col. Tom Wilkinson, a former commander of Fort Pickett and current member of Blackstone Town Council, were interviewed for a story in HONOR, a special edition covering Veterans’ Affairs. The story was titled, “What’s In A Name?

The story was titled, “What’s In A Name? Plenty, it turns out, when it comes to installations and Confederate generals,” and asked both retired citizen-soldiers their thoughts on possibly renaming military bases named in memory of Confederate Generals.
