MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS PRIVILEGES
Nottoway County soon may be able to receive federal grants from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) because it’s now a member of the Commonwealth Regional Council (CRC).
CRC Executive Director, Melody Foster, told the Board of Supervisors last Thursday night that the CRC has completed Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region which is one of the requirements for EDA eligibility.
Ms. Foster reported Nottoway County is the secondlargest work destination in the region. Health care is the region’s largest job sector, and Nottoway County’s top farm commodity is poultry and eggs.
Supervisor Steve Bowen expressed disappointment that a DEQ water withdrawal permit for Prince Edward County’s 740-acre Sandy River Reservoir is set to expire in Sept. 2021. “I know that was a pipe dream...is someone going to reapply?” Bowen asked.
Such a decision would be made by Prince Edward County. Sandy River Reservoir has an average daily flow of 3.73 million gallons per day.
The CRC’s office is located in Farmville. Member counties include Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward -- most of which were members of the former Piedmont Planning District Commission.
