She Made History
Tyler Williams (Central of Lunenburg Class of 2017) recently met Mrs. Violet Johnson Harris (left) for the first time at West Hill Baptist Church in Victoria. Mrs. Harris, who now resides in Washington, D.C., was visiting the church on June 11th after attending her 50th class reunions of Central High and Lunenburg High during the weekend.
Central High (consolidated school) opened its doors in the fall of 1966 after the closing of Kenbridge and Victoria High Schools. Mrs. Harris left Lunenburg to attend Central during her senior year under Lunenburg County’s Freedom of School Choice. She was the first and only African- American to receive a diploma from Central High School on June 10th, 1967.
