Memories of case 27 years ago still haunt Lunenburg prosecutor

Lunenburg County’s Commonwealth’s Attorney is opposing the possible parole next week for convicted child killer, Charles Edward Zellers.

Robert Clement, who has served as Lunenburg’s top prosecutor for 39 years, calls the 1993 crime “without a doubt the most heinous I have ever prosecuted.”

Zellers, who today is 52, pleaded Guilty in Lunenburg Circuit Court to First Degree Murder and Forcible Sodomy in the 19-month-old death of his stepson, Michael Douglas Stephens. The official cause of death was “suffocation by smothering.”

Clement has written a letter to the Virginia Parole Board and recalls that Zellers, just as the trial was ready to begin, pleaded Guilty to avoid a possible Capital Murder conviction and death penalty.

A Parole Board hearing is set for next Tuesday, May 26th.
