3-1 School Board vote in Nottoway
Nottoway County’s next Superintendent of Public Schools will begin her duties here on July 15th at an annual starting salary of $130,000 per year -- about $8,000 more than her predecessor, Dr. Rodney Berry.
Dr. Tameshia V. Grimes, who will become the division’s 8th Superintendent since Nottoway consolidation in 1970, will commute from Moseley in Chesterfield County, where she currently serves as Director of Equity & Student Support Services.
School Board members voted 3-1 Friday night to hire Dr. Grimes. District Two School Board member Bob Horn cast the dissenting vote and declined comment that evening when asked why.
Horn on Monday, however, issued this statement in an email to the Courier-Record newsroom: “I feel I owe my constituents a reason for my ‘No’ vote. My ‘No’ vote for the new superintendent was not a reflection on the person or on her qualifications. However, the School Board has traditionally paid the incoming superintendent the same salary as the outgoing superintendent. I wanted to stay with this tradition but was outvoted. I believed keeping the current salary was the fiscally responsible thing to do.”
District Three School Board member Clive Pettis didn’t attend Friday’s special meeting and offered the Courier-Record an explanation, which is included in a sidebar story.
