5-2 vote extends Clay’s permit

But Council will review again in Feb.

A conditional use permit allowing Clay’s Assisted Living to continue operating has been extended -- but for only three months after four citizens voiced concerns at a public hearing last week.

Town Council’s vote last Wednesday (Nov. 14th) on Lonnie Morgan’s motion was 5-2, with members Shelia Jones and Nathaniel Miller dissenting. Mrs. Jones preferred a six-month extension, saying she doubts three months is adequate time for management to properly address issues.

Wednesday night’s roll call followed nearly 90 minutes of discussion on the facility and its 47 residents, many of whom suffer from mental illness and are frequently seen walking along Lunenburg Avenue and 8th Street.
