I left town last Wednesday for a couple of days. Did anything exciting happen in Nottoway County while I was gone?
I’m glad the protests and demonstrations in Crewe were peaceful. Greg Eanes’ request was made in haste, and he should have sought approval from Town Council before asking Richmond and the Governor for the Confederal memorials on Monument Avenue. It was terrible timing and, to be honest, there’s no “good” timing for such a request.
Those monuments shouldn’t be vandalized or destroyed but instead displayed at Civil War battlefields in Appomattox or Petersburg. With all of that said, our readers don’t need to be reminded that Greg Eanes is a patriot, a scholar, and an honorable man. When I first met him in the early 1990s, he was talking about Civil War tourism. I didn’t get it back then, but Greg simply was trying to maximize Nottoway County’s business opportunities. While Nottoway had no major battle, Greg was trying to capitalize on the number of Civil War enthusiasts traveling back-and-forth through our county.
