Blackstone Town Council will hold a Continued Meeting today (Wednesday) at 6:00 p.m. to adopt a budget for 2020-21. The next budget, which takes effect July 1st, includes a $2.00 increase in monthly garbage collection fees to help the Town buy a new garbage truck. It also includes 3% raises for Town employees and higher raises in the police department to keep up with Nottoway County, where a starting deputy now makes about $42,000 per year. We’ll give you a raise rundown in our next edition. I’ve learned over the years that folks love reading about salaries...except their own.

Council will hold a special meeting next Wednesday, July 1st to formally submit two referendum questions to Judge Paul Cella for the Nov. 3rd ballot. Some residents speculate that if proposed armory renovations and a proposed rec. center with indoor pool are put on the ballot, both will be defeated. Blackstone at this writing has some $200,000 in outstanding utility bills since the pandemic. The Town’s meals tax has taken about a 20% hit. Remember, the referendum would be non-binding (advisory only). Some residents tell me the Town should focus only on vital core functions of government, which they insist don’t include cultural enlightenment or recreation.
