To help downtown restaurants expand dining capacities during the restriction-filled COVID-19 pandemic, Blackstone Town Council has approved a closure of Main Street for the next several Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Blackstone’s “Restaurant Revival” is scheduled to begin tomorrow (Thursday, June 4th) and run each evening (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Six blocks of Main Street will be closed those nights between Main & Church Streets and Main & Dinwiddie Avenue.

Council approved the measure, 6-0, last Wednesday.

Mayor Billy Coleburn announced the proposal, saying he was tagged on Facebook by citizen Deborah Alder, who showed him a story about a similar initiative in Hopewell.

Since the pandemic began here, Virginia restaurants have been allowed only to offer take-out orders and have outdoor dining, but they can use only 50% of their outdoor capacity. Most restaurants in the historic business district downtown have no outdoor dining capabilities.
