Blackstone officials Monday night authorized Town Manager Philip Vannoorbeeck to prepare a grant application to the state Dept. of Housing & Community Development (DHCD) and to search for other funds to begin renovations to the Harris Memorial Armory.

Monday’s 7-0 vote came during a special meeting to discuss results of last week’s advisory referendum, in which voters supported using Town funds to renovate the 1936 landmark, 773-669 (54-46%), and opposed using Town funds to build a new community center on High Street, 745-684 (52-48%).

The estimated $2 million project would turn the idle armory into a multi-use community center -- perhaps with Town offices.
