HEIGHTENED SECURITY

‘Gun’ comment raises fears at high school

Tensions high in aftermath of massacre in Florida

County authorities say they’re still investigating last week’s gun scare at Nottoway High School, which reported a total of 180 absences on Thursday due to parents’ concerns about the safety of their children.

The high school’s enrollment is 595, meaning 30% of the students were no-shows on Thursday.

A reported comment about a gun -- in the aftermath of the Feb. 14th school massacre that killed 17 in Parkland, Florida and wounded 14 others -- is being blamed for the Nottoway fears.

Authorities say no gun was found, and school officials say they have no reason to believe that a gun was at school.
