County resident among those to flee coronavirus

VOLUNTEER: ‘SAD AND SCARED FOR THE PEOPLE’

A Nottoway County woman is back home after being evacuated safely from China, where an outbreak of the deadly coronavirus continues.

Kayleigh Lawson, 24, is among 139 U. S. Peace Corps volunteers who had been serving in the world’s most populous nation since last June.

She returned Friday to her home on Spainville Road north of Blackstone with mixed emotions and was welcomed by her relieved parents, Charles & Becky.

“I feel incredibly privileged and lucky,” Kayleigh told the Courier-Record about being back on U. S. soil, “but I’m sad and scared for the people back in China. I’m happy to see my family, but cognizant that this is only possible because of my position with the U.S. government.
