Not a quiet start for new Sheriff

Blackstone Police say no charges will be filed in a twovehicle collision involving Nottoway County’s new Sheriff.

It was just the second day in office for Sheriff Robert Leroy Jones, 55, of Blackstone.

The accident occurred last Thursday, Jan. 2nd, at 1:20 p.m. at the intersection of North West Avenue and Barco Road in Blackstone.

According to Chief Nick Kuzmiak, Sheriff Jones was driving north on North West Avenue in a 2013 Dodge Charger when he approached the Barco Road intersection.

Kuzmiak said a 1998 Chevrolet Prizm, driven by 25-yearold Tia Jaykayla Womack of Blackstone, was traveling west on Barco Road.

Kuzmiak said Ms. Womack made a left turn onto North West Avenue in front of Sheriff Jones “resulting in a front end collision.”

Kuzmiak said Sheriff Jones suffered a minor injury but was not transported.

Ms. Womack and 19-year-

old passenger Sabrina Marie Fair both were transported by Nottoway Emergency Squad to an area hospital for what Kuzmiak described as minor injuries. Kuzmiak said a third passenger, identified as the two-month-old son of Ms. Womack, showed no signs of injury but was transported along with his mother.

Sheriff Jones had a busy start to his term. He spent New Year’s Day probing a murder. Yesterday, a female prisoner in chains escaped at 11 a.m. from the courthouse complex. She was captured about 90 minutes later.
