MONUMENTAL REQUEST

Supervisors are asked to move Confederate memorial

CITIZEN SAYS NEW SITE SHOULD BE FOUND FOR 1893 STATUE

A lifelong Nottoway County resident, who’s calling for removal and relocation of the Confederate statue in front of Nottoway Court House, is being praised by one member of the Board of Supervisors for her approach.

Sarah Allen of Crewe appeared Thursday night before the Board of Supervisors and reiterated comments she had made three nights earlier at Blackstone Town Hall.

Her request comes as Confederate statues in Richmond and elsewhere across the South are being removed -- some by government action, others by demonstrators, protesters, and rioters.

The same night Nottoway Supervisors were meeting, Farmville Town Council held a special meeting and decided to remove that Town’s Confederate statue on Town property across from Longwood University.
