$750,000 of ‘free money’ could have benefitted armory

A member of Blackstone Town Council says he’s “disappointed” in his colleagues for not seeking a $750,000 federal grant to renovate the Harris Memorial Armory.

Ward C rep, Col. Tom Wilkinson, made his remarks at the end of Council’s Apr. 18th meeting.

Wilkinson was referring to a federal grant for historic properties that required no local match. The deadline to apply was April 1st and, in late March, he wanted a special meeting where Council could vote to apply. Mayor Billy Coleburn contacted individual members of Council and said he found there wasn’t sufficient support to call a special meeting.
