TOWN TAKES HIT ON MEALS TAX

Pandemic causes fewer to eat out, but cigarette sales increase

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has greatly curtailed restaurant activity, the Town of Blackstone -- in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2020 -- saw a 16% reduction in its meals tax collections.

It’s the first time in four years that Blackstone hasn’t set a new meals tax record.

The coronavirus pandemic arrived here in mid-March and impacted the last four months of the 2019-20 fiscal year.

COVID has impacted every month of the current budget year with no end in sight.
