VCBR BILL EARMARKED FOR STUDY

State has invested millions in sex predator facility in Nottoway

Legislation that could negatively impact a major employer in Nottoway County has been referred to the Virginia Crime Commission for further study.

Senate Bill 1244, introduced by Sen. Joe Morrissey (D-Petersburg) seeks to repeal a decades-old law that lets the state hold certain offenders -- including violent sexual predators -- at the Virginia Center for Behavioral Rehabilitation (VCBR) for treatment after they complete their prison sentences.

The civil commitment law led to construction of VCBR, which opened near Burkeville in 2008 with a $62 million price tag. The state facility is in the final stages of a $110 million expansion, which is expected to be completed later this year.
