LaVerne Simmons Mellen, age 84, of Crewe, VA, formerly of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away on Friday, August 24, 2018. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Donald Stewart Mellen, Sr; and two brothers, Ivan and Kim Simmons. LaVerne is survived by her four children, Donald S. Mellen, Jr. (Carol) of Winterhaven, FL, Janette M. Baranishyn (Peter) of Crewe, VA, Jeffrey D. Mellen (Debera) of Midas, NV, and Mark J. Mellen (Ryanna) of Salt Lake City, UT; six grandchildren; six great -grandchildren; a great-greatgrandson; two sisters, Joan Matern and Lori Kinkade (Jerry); and two brothers, Bill Simmons (Cheryl) and Terry Simmons (Chris) of Arizona. A celebration of LaVerne’s life will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, August 30, 2018, and from 1 to 3 p.m., Friday, August 31, 2018, at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd. (Bus. Hwy. 460), near Blackstone. LaVerne traveled the world with her husband while he was in the U.S. Air Force. During the Vietnam War, she trained communication station personnel, handled top secret war information, and was a civilian courier. She and her husband, upon retirement from service, moved to Nevada and owned and operated the Midas Gold Circle Bar in Midas. After retiring a second time, Donald and LaVerne relocated to Virginia in 2004 to be with their daughter. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association, P. O.
