HAYNIE S. ROBERTSON Former owner of Blackstone Fuel & Supply

Robertson

Haynie Sydney Robertson, Jr., 93, of Blackstone, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.

Haynie was born on September 20, 1927, to Haynie Sydney and Edith Hite Robertson in his childhood home on Main Street, Blackstone, Virginia. After graduating from Blackstone High School in 1944, he entered the Navy wanting to serve during WWII.

After leaving the Navy, he attended Episcopal High School and Hampden-Sydney College, but his greatest joy was attending the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA.

Before returning to Blackstone, he spent time in New Hampshire singing and playing his stand-up bass under the stage name of Bob Haynie. He loved those years since he always aspired to be like Frank Sinatra and other greats of that time.

Upon his return to Blackstone in the early ‘50s and, until 2012, he was owner and operator of Blackstone Fuel and Supply Company. He was a lifelong member of Crenshaw United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and performed ‘O Holy Night for over 60 years.

He married Mary Elba Fraher in 1956, enjoyed 64 years together, and raised two children. Haynie is survived by his daughter, Mary Sydney Gilley and husband Bruce; grandson Sam Gilley; son Jim Robertson and wife Justine, children Lexi and Will.

Haynie was an active member in several organizations, but his greatest accomplishment was being a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He spent all of his downtime with them. He threw the ball to Sydney and Jim after work until it got so dark they couldn’t see it. He taught them how to drive out at the farm. He attended all of their activities and always cheered them on. He was Sam’s biggest fan, too, always interested in what he was doing whether it was his obsession with dinosaurs and the Titanic or writing code for his job.

A joint service will be planned at a later date for Haynie and Elba. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Shriners Hospital for Children or any organization that benefits children. Arrangements are by the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home of Blackstone, VA. www.mcmillianfuneralhome.com
