Eugene Thomas Sones, 88, a retired Senior Navy Chief Petty Officer, crossed the bar at his home in Edenton, N.C. on Nov. 4, 2020.
Gene was born March 13, 1932 in Hughesville, PA. He was formerly of Crewe, VA, where he served as Vice Mayor, was on the Town Council, Kiwanis Club, member of Crewe Methodist Church, and American Legion. Gene also retired from Fort Pickett.
After many years of traveling with his wife of 69 years, Jean Farrar Sones, they made their home in Quinby, VA and then later in Edenton, NC.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Viola Sones; his brother, Chet; his sister, Mary Jenkins; his son, Tommy Sones; and his daughter, Randi Sones.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; his sons, Jimaye/Kim Rouse of Edenton, NC and Steve/Becky of Crewe; his grandchildren, Suzanne Long/ Dave, Amber Jackson/Robbie, and Jacob Sones/Maggie; his great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Millie Long, Thomas Jackson, and Gabriel Sones; a niece, Diane Miller; and two nephews, Dave and Brian Jenkins; and his dear daughter-in-law, Susie Sones.
Other than his family, Gene loved serving his country. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years with two tours in Vietnam. His proudest achievement was receiving the Navy Commendation Medal during The Cuban Missile Crisis.
Graveside services were held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 7, 2020 in Crewe Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Patrick Henry Boy’s Plantation.
