In four varsity softball games last week, the Nottoway Lady Cougars scored a total of 47 runs and allowed only two, but those two scores came Friday in the bottom of the 12th inning at Amelia.
Nottoway lost a nailbiter, 2-1, in a game dominated by stellar pitching from Lady Cougar McKenna Falwell , who struck-out 25 of the 45 batters she faced, and Amelia’s Raye Green , who struckout 14. Both pitchers each threw 170 pitches.
Friday’s epic battle was tied 0-0 in the 12th (fifth extra inning) when Nottoway’s Amaya Meekins doubled, Tessa Hall bunted to move Meekins to third, and Alyssa Boelte drove-in Meekins.
Amelia, however, refused to surrender. Lady Raider shortstop Jasia Miles walked on a full count pitch, Green doubled, then Kyra Owens bunted to load the bases. Rachel Wells singled-in Miles to tie the game. Falwell struckout the next batter, and the next Amelia batter groundedout.
With two outs and the scored tied, 1-1, Amelia’s Hannah Comfort hit an 0-1 pitch just over pitcher Falwell’s outstretched glove and beat the throw to 1st base, scoring Green to win the game.
