NOTTOWAY 20, LUNENBURG 19
A late interception by Willie Lawson saved Nottoway from BIG GAME heartbreak and preserved the Cougars’ 20-19 varsity football victory Saturday night over the visiting Central of Luneburg Chargers.
Nottoway avenged last year’s 21-20 overtime loss in Victoria but nearly gave it away, blowing a two-touchdown lead in the 4th quarter.
With 1:31 remaining, Central was trailing 20-19 and driving near midfield when the Chargers tried a halfback pass, which caught the Cougars offguard.
Receiver Jonathan Hatchett slipped through the Cougar secondary and was wide open by nearly 10 yards, but the pass was underthrown due to Cougar pressure, and Nottoway’s Lawson snatched it from the air to seal Saturday’s win.
