Birdie wins title for state high school champion and former touring pro

Sixteen-year-old Taylor Hubbard of Aylett drained a five-ft. birdie putt on the first hole of sudden death Sunday to give him and partner Cameron Yancey of Blackstone a come-from-behind victory in the annual Russell Moon Invitational golf tournament at rain-soaked Lunenburg Country Club in Kenbridge.

Yancey, who played on the PGA Tour in 2003, and Hubbard, a sophomore at King William High School and the reigning Virginia High School League Class 2 state golf champion, defeated William “Football” Thompson and Chris Neal, both of South Hill.
