Teen runners win Blackstone 5K
Graham Wilkerson of Crewe took a wrong turn near the finish but still managed to win the Blackstone Arts & Crafts 5K run Saturday.
Wilkerson, a 16-year-old stand-out runner on Nottoway High School’s cross country team, finished the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, five seconds--two seconds faster than his winning time last year. Cougar teammates Oden Alaric (19:10) and Matthew Ragland (20:59) won 2nd and 3rd place among male runners.
Lady Cougar Sara Shook was the fastest female at 25:05, followed by Kenston Forest runner Charlotte Walker (28:02) and 39-year-old Riki West (28:30), the only adult to place in the youthful field.
Among male walkers, top finishers were John B. Mahaney (39:41), Peter Dayton (40:08), and Ismeal Gomez (52:37). Among female walkers, top finishers were Hannah Mahaney (39:26), Juniela Perez (39:32), and Mya Mahaney (39:36). Forty-five runners and walkers participated in the annual event, which started and finished in front of Bevell’s Hardware.
