VICTIM HAD JUST CELEBRATED HIS 30TH BIRTHDAY
A Nottoway County couple were sentenced last week in Henrico Circuit Court to 60 years in prison for the murder two years ago of a man in a Whole Foods store parking lot in Short Pump.
Both suspects were arrested in Sept. 2023 after a police stakeout on Rt. 360 near Good Hope Road in Nottoway County.
The duo heading to the state penitentiary are Deontae Marquel Winston, 35, and Katoya Brown, 37, who at the time were living in the 100 block of Archer Street in Crewe.
The fatal shooting occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Saturday evening, Sept. 2, 2023 in the parking lot of Whole Foods grocery store in the 11100 block of West Broad Street.
According to CBS6 News in Richmond, Julian McClenny, 30, was shot and killed outside the Short Pump store while on a walk with his girlfriend after his birthday dinner.
According to CBS6, McClenny and his girlfriend observed defendant Winston aggressively panhandling and cursing at a man in the parking lot.
Winston then, according to CBS6, “approached McClenny and his girlfriend in a hostile manner…McClenny told his girlfriend to keep walking and put himself between Winston and her.”
Winston then pulled out a gun and, when McClenny tried to take the gun away, Winston fired and both men fell to the ground. CBS6 said both men struggled, and Ms. Brown and four children — with whom she shared custody with Winston — watched from a mini-van.
“Ms. Brown jumped out of the mini-van, grabbed her own gun, and fired at McClenny, striking him in the stomach… McClenny was still moving, so she shot him again in the head,” CBS6 quoted prosecutors.
Winston and Ms. Brown drove off in their mini-van and were arrested two days later in Nottoway — the same day Mc- Clenny died from his wounds.
Winston and Ms. Brown earlier this year were convicted in the case of First-Degree Murder, Use of a Firearm in Commission of Murder, and four counts of Felony Child Neglect.
