ATTACKING BLIGHT

Nottoway to begin enforcement

Nottoway County adopted a Blight Ordinance last Fall and has begun addressing some dilapidated buildings.

Supervisor John Roark last Thursday night requested an update on the County’s progress, and Planner Gregg Zody said he’s identified blighted properties on Woodman’s Road and Piney Green Road.

Supervisor Bo Toth said it was his recollection that the County is going to enforce the ordinance only on a complaint basis. Toth added that those who complain are to give their name and address to ensure that they live near the blight. Toth said he doesn’t want somebody “just riding around the county looking for things.”

Board Chairman Bill Collins noted that the “Bible Road drug problem seems to have abated” following improvements to a mobile home once described by residents in that community as “the meth trailer.”

Nottoway’s ordinance is modeled after the Town of Blackstone’s, which describes light as structures with interior construction components visible from the exterior.
