Scary Moment Mrs. Jacey Braun posted these photos on Facebook after bullet last Friday afternoon struck her windshield while she was driving into Blackstone with her two toddlers. Part of the bullet entered truck she was driving and came to rest on dashboard (see smaller photo in today’s lead story). Left photo was taken inside vehicle; right photo was taken outside.
IN BROAD DAYLIGHT ON NORTH WEST AVE.
A Blackstone woman and her two children in the back seat were “greeted” near the town welcome sign last week by a bullet that shattered the front windshield just inches from where she was seated.
The incident occurred Friday afternoon, Feb. 20th at approximately 12:30 p.m. on North West Avenue.
Lt. Tony Mayton said the woman was entering town limits, driving south in a 2011 green Dodge Ram truck when a bullet pierced her windshield.
“I had just come off the ramp from 460,” Mrs. Jacey Braun told the Courier-Record. “I had crossed the bridge (460 overpass) and was near the 45 mph zone. I can’t remember the exact spot but know the general area. I drove a little ways to find a safe space to pull over. I ended up pulling over at 601 North West Avenue to call police.”
Lt. Mayton said the bullet appeared to have come “straight down,” suggesting someone likely had fired a gun into the air. Mayton said the bullet is believed to be 9mm in caliber and part of it entered the vehicle.
Mr. Braun posted on her Facebook page and the “What’s Happening in Blackstone, VA” page that she was driving “when a bullet came through my windshield. Way too close for comfort! It dropped down into my windshield and hit the dash. I am praising God that me and my kiddos are okay. I was in disbelief when I saw the bullet — a bullet directly in front of me at chest level.”
Mrs. Braun’s children are ages 2 and 3. They were in child safety seats, facing the rear. She said her two-year-old told police, ‘It pop. It pop!’ because he heard the windshield.”
Lt. Mayton said there were no reports of gunfire in town at the time of the incident and that police don’t believe the vehicle was deliberately shot. Recent years have witnessed increased reports of random gunfire in town, mostly at night.
Mrs. Braun posted on Facebook, “I thank God I only have two very small cuts on my hands from the windshield being shattered and that the kids and I are okay. Another blessing? I was supposed to have my windshield replaced the day before but, due to rain, we had to reschedue it. If you are shooting a gun, PLEASE remember what goes up must come down.”
