A 40-year-old Blackstone man has received an active sentence of 16 1/2 years for molesting a girl under the age of 13.
Jackie Lynn Dorton of the 300 block of Third Street was sentenced Monday in Nottoway Circuit Court to 95 years in prison — with 78.5 of those years suspended.
Here’s a breakdown of the terms:
•50 years with 38 1/2 years suspended for Object Sexual Penetration by Force;
•5 years with no time suspended for Possession of Child Pornography;
•20 years with all 20 years suspended for Aggravated Sexual Battery of a Victim Less than 13 Years of Age.
•20 years with all 20 years suspended on an amended charge of Sodomy of a Victim Less than 13 Years of Age.
Dorton pleaded Guilty to the charges last September.
The original case included 10 felony charges — six of which were nol prossed last year.
Blackstone Police say the victim made a report to police in March 2025, and that the offenses occurred from 2017 until 2023.
Judge Joseph Teefey told the courtroom that he was sentencing Dorton to the highest amount of active time recommended by Virginia’s sentencing guidelines.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney David Chappell argued that while sentencing guidelines must be considered, they don’t have to be followed — and shouldn’t be — when the offenses are so serious and “abhorrent.”
The defendant apologized Monday to the victim, saying he has no excuses and that no matter how many times he says he’s sorry, it can never change what he did. As part of his sentence, Dorton must successfully complete sex offender treatment as part of probation and is to have no contact with the victim or any member of her immediate family.
