A front seat passenger who survived a fatal head-on crash on Kenbridge Road (Rt. 40) south of Blackstone has returned home from the hospital but has a long road to recovery.
She’s also having to take special protections to protect the life of her unborn baby.
Julie Elizabeth Boyd, 30, of Blackstone, suffered a shattered pelvis in the crash that fatally injured her boyfriend, 26-year-old Cody Peyton. She returned home last Wednesday, Aug. 6th, nine days after the crash.
The tragedy occurred Monday night, July 28th, at approximately 9:40 p.m., about two-tenths of a mile south of Dobbins Bridge Road.
State Police say Peyton was driving toward Blackstone in a Chevy Impala — and Julie was in the passenger seat — when an oncoming Nissan Pathfinder, driven by 40-year-old Stephanie W. Powell of Halifax, crossed the centerline and struck the Impala head-on. Three medical choppers responded to the crash — one for each patient. Cody died on MedFlight en route to Chippenham in Richmond.
Julie Boyd’s sister, Jessica Schleife of Blackstone, said that Julie was 17 weeks, five days pregnant at the time of the crash and. At presstime, her unborn baby remarkably is still healthy. “But Julie’s entire pelvis is broken, and doctors say that if they were to do surgery to repair the pelvis, she’ll lose the baby. So they’re going to try and let it heal on its on. She has to have 24-hour care for herself and also someone to help with the baby” (her 1-year-old son, Julian Michael Peyton).
Julie’s late boyfriend, Cody, lived previously in Louisa County but, at the time of his death, was living on Rocky Hill Road (Rt. 153) north of Blackstone. He’s also the father of Julie’s son who turned 1 on Aug. 3rd. “Their son just turned one-year-old — while Julie was still in the hospital — so he had to spend his first birthday without his mom and dad. That tears Julie up every time she even thinks about it — and every time their son says, ‘Da-da,’ she cries.”
Jessica says her sister Julie also suffered numerous other injuries in the crash.
The condition of the other driver, Stephanie Powell, was not known at presstime. State Police have said charges are pending in the crash.
