BILL WILSON IS SURPRISED AT ALMA MATER
A native of Crewe, who’s a long-time attorney and former member of the House of Delegates, has been honored with the David Marion Award for Legal Excellence.
William T. “Bill” Wilson of Covington received the award last Fall during a meeting of the Hampden-Sydney College Bar Association. Wilson, 88, graduated from H-SC in 1960 and has practice law in Covington since 1963. He’s licensed to practice in both VA and West Virginia.
Wilson served for six years (1963-69) in the Virginia Air National Guard, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. He served as a Delegate in the House of Delegates in the Virginia General Assembly for 16 years (1974-1990). He has had extensive involvement in the Virginia State Bar, including as a past chair of the Conference of Local Bar Associations of the VSB and of the Senior Lawyers Conference of the VSB — in addition to having served on numerous other VSB committees, (Executive Committee, Judicial Nominations Committee, Professionalism Committee, and Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee). He has served as a Substitute Judge in Alleghany County and is a Past President of the Alleghany-Bath-Highland Bar Association.
In 2016, Wilson received the “Champion of Justice Trophy” from the Virginia Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).
In 2022, he received the Edward L. Chambers, Jr. Award from the Virginia State Bar in recognition of his devotion of significant time to the VSB.
Wilson is also a past President of the Hampden-Sydney College Alumni Association. He is married to Langhorne “Lang” Clark Wilson, and together they received the Chancellor’s Award from Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in 2017 for their leadership in philanthropy.
Wilson was surprised by the honor, responding, “To say that I am surprised is an understatement. Until I heard the words ‘Crewe, Virginia’ — where I am from — I did not have a clue as to the award recipient…It is such a great honor, especially coming from here at Hampden Sydney…I am especially pleased and honored to receive the award on Hampden-Sydney College’s 250th Anniversary.”
Members of Wilson’s Crewe family include: father, the late Linwood Earl (Tug) Wilson; mother, the late Elizabeth Goodall Wilson; sisters, the late Helen Kee Wilson Weston, and the late Brenda Early Wilson Simms. He still has a number of relatives in the Crewe-Burkeville area.
