SUSPECT AT-LARGE AFTER SCAM VIA INTERNET
Nottoway authorities are investigating a reported armed robbery in broad daylight.
The incident occurred last Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 25th, near the center of the county and involved the attempted purchase of a vehicle via the internet. No one was injured.
Nottoway Sheriff Robert Jones says that deputies were called at 1:11 p.m. to a residence in the 5000 block of East Courthouse Road in the general area of Nottoway Courthouse.
Jones said the caller told officers that he was purchasing a car off of an “App” from a subject. Jones said that when the supposed buyer arrived at the victim’s residence, he didn’t match the “App” description. He apparently had used a fake identity.
Jones said the man displayed a weapon, took the victim’s wallet, removed cash and threw the wallet to the ground, then got back into the vehicle and left the scene.
Jones said the perpetrator was driving what was described as a white four-door sedan.
A Facebook Follower of the Courier-Record, identifying himself as a neighbor of the victim, told the newspaper that the suspect posted a car for sale on “Marketplace” under a fake name. “He hopped out of white (Dodge) Challenger, put a gun to Mr. _____’s (name withheld) nose and took $800 from him and sped-off.” The resident told the Courier that another neighbor of the victim has identified the perpetrator, who apparently has ties to Brunswick County.
Sheriff Robert Jones did not release a physical or clothing description of the suspect — and didn’t say whether or not the suspect was wearing a mask.
Authorities suggest that when making transactions with strangers met online, to meet in a safe place. For example, Blackstone Police Department has a special spot in its parking lot for such transactions.
