The Nottoway Public School division educates a number of children who don’t reside in Nottoway — but how many?
During a joint meeting with the School Board on Monday, March 2nd, Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Collins said that some teachers who don’t live in the county bring students with them who also don’t reside here.
School Finance Director Heather Maier said the division still gets to count those students toward its ADM (Average Daily Membership) number.
But, Collins noted, “The County is still paying for those students with the required local match, and we’re not receiving taxes from their parents.”
Division Supt. Dr. Marcia Martin said she didn’t have the exact number of such students off-hand.
Supervisor Bo Toth noted that counties charge out-ofcounty students annual tuition. Nottoway did so for many years — once as high as $1,600 — but stopped that policy about 10 years ago.
School Finance Director Maier said some counties still charge tuition for out-of-county students “but we get more if we don’t charge a fee because if you charge a fee, you can’t count them in your ADM.”
