‘GRATEFUL FOR OPPORTUNITY’
A Crewe native, who grewup worshipping and later serving as Assistant Pastor of Spring Hill Baptist Church, is the new Pastor-Elect of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Warfield in Brunswick County.
Like Spring Hill, Piney Grove is a historically significant African-American Baptist church, organized in 1868.
Rev. Daniel Smith, 30, shared the news last week. He’s a 2013 graduate of Nottoway High School and received his Bachelor’s degree in 2019 from Tabernacle Divinity School.
Pastor Smith began preaching at Spring Hill at age 18 and has served for several years as Assistant Pastor under Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Travis Warren and First Lady Letitia Warren.
Rev. Warren said of Smith’s appointment, “As Reverend Daniel Smith prepares for this next chapter in ministry, I reflect with pride and gratitude on the 15 years I’ve had the privilege of serving as his pastor at Spring Hill. I’ve truly watched him grow — not just in age, but in wisdom, maturity, and spiritual leadership. From his early days as a passionate youth leader to his current role as a dependable assistant pastor, Daniel has consistently shown himself to be trustworthy, hardworking, and deeply committed to the call of God on his life. He has a heart for people, a gift for teaching, and a spirit of humility that draws others in. Watching him grow into the man and minister he is today has been one of the great joys of my pastoral journey.”
Rev. Smith says the biggest challenge to pastoring is “competing against myself — pushing myself to be better every day.”
And the greatest reward, he says: “Simply seeing others grow in their walk with Christ.”
Smith, son of Darrell, Sr. & Christine Smith of Crewe, is employed by Dinwiddie County Public Schools and is married to Treniquis (Lee) Smith of Dinwiddie.
“At 30-years-old, I am truly grateful for the opportunity to step into this new season of ministry,” Daniel says of his appointment. “The love and support of my Spring Hill family, my wife Treniquis, and my own family have been a tremendous blessing to me on this journey.”
Smith will be installed at Piney Grove on Sunday, October 5th.
Pastor Smith’s hobbies in his spare time include bowling, mini-golf, and go-kart racing.
A southpaw, Smith two years ago published a children’s book, Lou the Lefty Lionness, to encourage left-handed children. Smith’s book is geared toward elementary school-age students and offers encouragement for southpaws, but all children who may face various challenges including bullying.
