For the third straight month, School Board member Bill Outlaw gave colleagues a “pop quiz” last Thursday night.
Outlaw asked Board members and staff to name Nottoway’s State Delegate in Richmond.
After five seconds of silence, Chairman Damien Rowe accurately replied, “Lee Ware.”
“You get the gold star again,” replied Outlaw.
In February, Rowe correctly answered “Tammy Mulchi” after Outlaw asked Board members to name Nottoway’s State Senator.
Outlaw in January asked Board members if they recognized the name, Amy Guidera. She was former Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s Sec. of Education, a fact that appeared to escape other Board members that night.
Outlaw prefaced his “quiz” last Thursday by asking Division Supt. Dr. Marcia Martin, “Are graduating seniors expected to know who their elected officials are?”
Dr. Martin replied, “I hope they do if they pass Government.”
“Hope is not a method,” replied Outlaw, who later added, “If we expect our graduates to know some of these things, I think it’s only reasonable that we ourselves know them.”
Chairman Rowe said of Delegate Ware, “May I add, that he’s one of the nicest men I’ve ever met. He’s very, very personable and just a very nice man.”
Outlaw pointed out that Del. Ware is a retired high school History teacher.
Outlaw had one final question for colleagues and staff. He said he and his family last week visited Monticello because, in part, “This year is the 250th Annivesary — the 250th Anniversary of what?”
Rowe answered, “The Declaration,” referring to the July 4, 1776 Declaration of Independence.
