Galloping Back Into History DAR and Colonial Dames members recently enjoyed a tour of the Robert Thomas Carriage Museum in Blackstone. Shelia Amos (left) and Lucy “Cookie” Currin (right) are shown with Robert “Bob” Thomas, tour director, at the carriage museum in Blackstone that carries his late father’s name.
Members of the William Taylor Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Meherrin Chapter of the Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century toured 18th century Schwartz Tavern and the Robert Thomas Carriage Museum on Saturday, October 18th.
Those two sites are important tourist stops in the Town of Blackstone. Historic Schwartz Tavern is a restored and furnished 18th century stagecoach stop. The Robert Thomas Carriage Museum has the second largest public display of horsedrawn vehicles in Virginia.
The tour group was fortunate to have Bob Thomas as its outstanding guide at both sites. It was Mr. Thomas’ father, Robert B. Thomas, Jr., who brought to fruition his dream of the Carriage Museum to share with the public his collection of horsedrawn vehicles.
His son, who conducted the tour, taught history for 32 years with Chesterfield County Schools before becoming curator for both for the Carriage Museum and also Schwartz Tavern. He presently serves as Vice-President of the Nottoway County Historical Association and Chairman of the Blackstone Tourism Committee.
