Local suspect now held at PRJ

A Blackstone drug fugitive recently apprehended in Pennsylviania has been extradited to Virginia. He’s now being held without bond at Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville.

Derrick Jermaine Lawrence, 44, of Nottoway Avenue in Blackstone, allegedly had fled here last Fall. He was charged last April after a police drug raid at his home. Authorities said they seized suspected cocaine, psychedelic mushrooms, ecstacy, prescription opioids, and a couple of pounds of marijuana.

Then on the morning of Nov. 3, 2025, authorities issued another warrant at Lawrence’s residence, seizing what police described as “over five pounds of marijuana, approximately one ounce of cocaine, a 9 mm pistol, and various items related to the distribution of illegal drugs. He was served on those new charges on Feb. 17th by Nottoway Sheriff ’s Office, according to lead investigator in the case, Blackstone Lt. Tony Mayton.

A convicted felony, Lawrence is now facing 10 various drug and weapons charges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 25th in General District Court.

In April 2019, Lawrence received 20 years in prison — with all time suspended except for nine months — for two counts of Manufacture/etc. of a Controlled Substance.
